Rhetoric Review is a scholarly interdisciplinary journal publishing in all areas of rhetoric and writing and providing a professional forum for its readers to consider and discuss current topics and issues. The journal publishes manuscripts that explore the breadth and depth of the discipline, including history, theory, writing, praxis, technical/professional communication, philosophy, rhetorical criticism, cultural studies, multiple literacies, technology, literature, public address, graduate education, and professional issues. Rhetoric Review also invites readers to contribute to the Burkean Parlor, a discourse forum for discussion of the journal's published articles as well as professional issues. Review essays, commissioned by the editor, are included as a regular feature. Book reviews are assigned by the editor.

Submission:

Submit three copies of the manuscript to the Editor, Theresa Jarnagin Enos, Department of English, The University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721–0067 (phone: 520–621–3371; fax: 520–621–7397; e-mail: enos@u.arizona.edu). Enclose an envelope with a return address to which return postage—and postage sufficient for mailing two copies to peer reviewers—has been paper clipped.

Cover Letter:

The cover letter should include the contact author's complete mailing address, e-mail address, and telephone and fax numbers. In the cover letter, the author(s) should request publication of the manuscript in Rhetoric Review and should include a statement that the manuscript is not previously published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere (manuscripts copyrighted electronically or online will also not be considered).

Manuscript Preparation:

Manuscripts should be prepared according to the guidelines of the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (2nd ed.). Double-space all material and place in the following order: title page, text, notes, works cited, appendixes, tables, and figures. Because all manuscripts are blind reviewed, author identification should appear on the title page of one manuscript copy only. Author identification includes the names and affiliations of all authors; the name, mailing address, e-mail address, and telephone and fax numbers of the corresponding author; and a running head of no more than 48 letters and spaces. Number all manuscript pages, including the tables and figures.

Tables and Figures:

Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short, descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.

Illustrations:

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

  • 300 dpi or higher
  • Sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good- quality color prints should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.

Length:

Manuscripts should be no longer than 7,500 words, including notes, works cited, and appendixes. Biographical blurbs should be no longer than 100 words. Contributions to the Burkean Parlor are welcome.

Permissions:

Authors are responsible for all statements made in their work and for obtaining permission from copyright owners to use a lengthy quotation (exceeding the limits of fair use) or to reprint or adapt a table or figure published elsewhere. Authors should write to original author(s) and publisher of such material to request nonexclusive world rights in all languages for use in print and nonprint versions of the article and in future editions. Provide copies of all permissions and credit lines obtained.
