Instructions for Authors
Articles submitted to The Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time.
Each manuscript should be submitted as an email to either stephen@vardihowe.com or philip.murphy@sas.ac.uk. Articles should be double-spaced and with ample margins, and notes typed separately at the end of the text, and also double-spaced. All pages (including those containing only diagrams and tables) should be numbered consecutively.
There is no standard length for articles but 8,000 words (including notes and references) is a useful target. Details of the author's institutional affiliation, full address and other contact information should be included on a separate cover sheet. Any acknowledgements should be included on the cover sheet as should a note of the exact length of the article.
Electronic Submission
Authors should send the final, revised version of their articles in electronic form. Electronic material should be in PC compatible MS Word format.

Tables and captions to illustrations
Tables must be on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also included on a separate sheet. Tables and Figures should be numbered consecutively by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to any symbols used.
Figures
Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher.
Citation of documents
Cite documents in endnotes in the following sequence: title and/or author/correspondents, date, series and (the first time) archival location, for example, The National Archives (TNA).

References to published material
The references should be given in shortened form in an endnote with a full version given in the list of references at the end of the article. Note reference numbers should appear as superior numerals following any punctuation marks (except the dash which they should precede). Quotations should be in single quotation marks, double within single, and the closing quotation mark should precede the punctuation, except where a complete sentence is quoted.
