Instructions for Authors

Submissions: The Editor welcomes submission of material for consideration as a main article or a review article. Comments on articles previously published in Asian Affairs can also be submitted. Main articles should be broadly consistent with the ‘Aims and Scope' of Asian Affairs, and generally be approximately 5000–7000 words in length. They should include a bibliographical note on the author of no more than 50 words. Review articles should be in the range of 1500–2000 words and book reviews 650–700 words for single titles or 1000 words for two titles. Please submit one copy by email attachment or floppy disk for Microsoft Word, plus one printed copy on A4 sheet (one side only) in exactly the same form as the email. Presentation: Manuscripts should be typed in journal style (Times New Roman, 12 pt font), doublespaced, on one side only and with good width margins. Please paginate the whole text. Authors should provide their postal and email addresses, telephone number and/or fax number.

Endnotes and references: Endnotes and references should be indicated in the text by superscript 1, 2, 3, etc. at the end of the relevant sentence and listed at the end of the paper in numerical order. Endnotes should elaborate on points made in the text, indicate sources of relevant research or refer to sources for further information. References should be written in the following style:

Book Reviews: Book titles should conform to the following pattern:

Author or Author & Author (first name surname) (ed) or (eds). Title. Series. Publisher, place of publication, date of publication, pages, (Roman numerals + Arabic numerals). Maps. Illust. etc. hardback or paperback. Price. ISBN (hardback price and ISBN, if in addition).

Points of style

  • The first paragraph of an article or book review should not start with the first line indented. Following paragraphs should continue with no extra spacing but the first line indented.
  • Numbers should be typed in the following styles: one-ten, 11–999, 1000–9999, 10,000–999,999, one million, 22 billion, etc.
  • Percentages in text: 20 percent; in tables and figures: 25%.
  • Centuries: use numbers with superscript th, st, rd
  • Quoted matter, whether in text or notes, should be in double quotes, typed one and one-half spaced. Substantial quotations (six lines or more) should be indented without quotation marks. Special words or phrases should be in single quotes.
  • Titles of publications and foreign terms should be in italics.
  • Whereas short hyphens are used between connected words, en dashes are used in explanatory phrases. Brackets should only be used for brief, supplementary information, such as dates or page numbers.
  • Following a colon, a lower case letter should be used, except for first letters of words in sub-titles in articles.
  • Spelling should be in UK English, except for titles of books and journals. Proper names should follow commonly used academic spellings.

Illustrations: Maps and figures should be clear and large enough to be suitable for reproduction and the lettering should be large enough to allow (if necessary) reduction in size for printing. All maps, diagrams and other drawings should be referred to as figures, and should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals in the order in which they are referred to in the text. Captions to figures, giving the appropriate figure number, should be typed on a separate page at the end of the article. Photographs should be submitted with captions and their position in the text should be marked as Plate 1, 2, 3, etc. in brackets. Permission to reproduce copyright material must be obtained by the author prior to submission and any acknowledgements should be included either in the text or the caption as appropriate.
