Instructions for Authors
Sociological Spectrum is a refereed interdisciplinary social science journal that publishes theoretical, methodological, quantitative and qualitative substantive research, and applied research articles in the areas of sociology, social psychology, anthropology, and political science. Generally, it does not publish book reviews or comments.
Submission of Manuscripts:
Submission of a manuscript to this journal is understood to imply that it or substantial parts of it have not been published or accepted for publication elsewhere and that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Submitted manuscripts will undergo an editorial screening and peer review by anonymous referees. All manuscripts submitted to Sociological Spectrum from those serving as Board Members or Editors of the journal undergo the same blind review process as do those submitted by other individuals. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become property of the publisher.
All manuscripts must be typed, double-spaced with 1 inch margins on all sides and following the current American Sociological Review style. Each manuscript should be accompanied by a title page including complete author name(s), affiliation(s), mailing address, phone, fax, and e-mail information (for multiple author papers, provide complete information for each author and indicate the corresponding author).
Authors should avoid placing any form of identification either on the body of the manuscript or on the required abstract of 150 words or less. Manuscripts that do not conform to these requirements will be returned to the authors for correction and will delay the review process.
The original and four copies of the manuscript, along with an electronic copy of the manuscript on disk or as an e-mail attachment (spectrum@mail.ucf.edu) formatted in Work Perfect or MS Word, should be submitted to the editor. Authors should avoid placing any form of identification either on the body of the manuscript. Along with the manuscript, please include a check or money order for $10.00 payable to Sociological Spectrum to help defray processing costs. Receipt of manuscript will be acknowledged only if self-addressed, stamped postcard is included.
Manuscripts should be submitted to: Sociological Spectrum, Department of Sociology, University of Central Florida- Cocoa, 1519 Clearlake Road, Bldg. 3 - Suite 283, Cocoa, FL 32922. Email: Spectrum@mail.ucf.edu.
Tables and Figures:
Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear a legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet.
References:
Should be listed on separate pages following the text, typed double-spaced, and should refer only to material cited in the manuscript. They should be listed in alphabetical order and otherwise follow the current American Sociological Review style. In text, reference citations should include author, year of publication, and, where needed, page numbers (Brown 1978, p. 54). Identify subsequent citations of the source in the same way as the first, not using ibid., op. cit., or loc. cit. Give both last names for dual authors; for more than two use "et al." in the text. When two authors have the same last name, use identifying initials in the text. For institutional authorship, supply minimum identification from the beginning of the complete citation (U.S. Bureau of the Census 1963, p. 117). If there is more than one reference to the same author and year, distinguish them by the letters a, b, etc. added to the year (Levy 1963a, p. 12).
The reference list must be complete and include all references in the text. The use of "et al." is not acceptable in the reference list; provide the names of all authors. The first letter of each word in an article title should be capitalized. Titles of books and journals will be printed in italics, so each word of the title should be underlined. Give the publisher's name in as brief a form as is fully intelligible. For example, John A. Wiley & Sons should be Wiley. If the cited material is unpublished, use -Forthcoming- with the name of journal or publisher. Otherwise use "Unpublished". Examples:
