Instructions for Authors

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

Social Work Education welcomes original contributions from all parts of the world on the understanding that their contents have not previously been published nor submitted elsewhere for publication. All submissions must be compatible with the Editorial Board Statement of Purpose and Position Statement on Promoting Equality and Anti-oppressive Practice

Article content relating to any one particular country must be appropriately contextualized for an international audience. Any questions about requirements for a publishable article may be sent to SocialWorkEducation@ed.ac.uk. All submissions will be subject to anonymous peer review, normally by two assesors. At the discretion of the editor, the comments made by referees will be sent to contributors. Contributors are responsible for obtaining permission for any extensive quotations and for ensuring the accuracy and fairness of their contributions.

All submissions should be made online at Social Work Education's ScholarOne Manuscripts site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to assessors. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review”.

If you have difficulties submitting your manuscript, please contact the editorial office at: SocialWorkEducation@ed.ac.uk

Papers should not exceed 6000 words in length and should be double spaced, with margins of at least 2.5 cm. The first sheet should include the title of the paper, name(s) of author(s) and for each author academic and/or professional qualifications as commonly used by the author, main appointment and address. The second page should repeat the title, and contain an abstract of not more than 200 words, together with five to ten key words. The third page should repeat the title as the heading to the start of the main text of the paper. All pages should be numbered. Proofs for checking will normally be sent to the submitting author to whom any correspondence and offprints will also be addressed.

References should follow the Harvard system, i.e. they should be indicated in the typescript by giving the authors' names, with the year of publication in parentheses, e.g. Smith (1984); or if there are more than two authors, Smith et al. (1984). If several papers from the same author(s) and from the same year are cited, (a), (b), (c), etc. should be put after the year of publication. The references should be listed in full alphabetically at the end of the paper on a separate page in the following standard form

Quinn, A. (1999) 'The use of experiential learning to help social work students assess their attitudes towards practice with older people', Social Work Education, vol. 18, no. 2, pp. 171-181.

Reder, P. & Duncan, S. (1999) Lost Innocents? A Follow-up Study of Fatal Child Abuse, Routledge, London.

Rose, W. (2001) 'Assessing children in need and their families: an overview of the framework', in The Child's World: Assessing Children in Need, ed. J. Horwath, Jessica Kingsley, London.

Titles of journals should not be abbreviated.

Illustrations should not be inserted in the text but each provided separately and labelled with Figure numbers, title of paper and name.  All photographs, graphs and diagrams should be referred to as Figures and should be numbered consecutively in the text in Arabic numerals (e.g. Fig. 3). A list of captions for the figures should be submitted on a separate page and should make interpretation possible without reference to the text. Captions should include keys to symbols.

Tables should be typed on separate pages and should be given Arabic numbers (e.g. Table 3). Their approximate position in the text should be indicated. Units should appear in parentheses in the column heading but not in the body of the table. Words or numerals should be repeated on successive lines; 'ditto' or 'do' should not be used.

Ideas in Action The Ideas in Action section of the Journal is designed to encourage individuals who wish to venture into writing for publication and others who may not have the time to focus on a lengthy piece. Its purpose is to encourage debate on current issues affecting practice, social work education, development of best practice and the management of social work and social care. Articles discussing topics relevant to any aspect of the profession and the changes it currently faces will be considered. Whatever the subject we want to stimulate a discourse. Submissions should be between 750 and 2500 words, but must conform to the journal's usual requirements. The Editor is happy to offer advice and assistance on any aspect of this section.

Books, or any other learning materials suitable for review in the journal, such as CD-ROMs, videos and other multimedia products should be sent to: Kate Morris, Institute of Applied Social Studies, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK

Proofs are supplied for checking and making essential typographical corrections, not for general revision or alteration. Proofs must be returned within 72 hours of receipt.

Free article access: Corresponding authors can receive 50 free reprints, free online access to their article through our website (www.informaworld.com) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Complimentary reprints are available through Rightslink® and additional reprints can be ordered through Rightslink® when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk

Copyright. It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to The Board of Social Work Education.
