Instructions for Authors

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

Contributions to JCAS from academics and others with specialist knowledge of African affairs are welcomed and should be submitted in English. The maximum length of any article should be 10,000 words. The manuscript and references should be typed in double spacing and should be submitted along with a short review (300 words maximum) of the contributor's previous publications, present occupation and research interests. Contributions should be submitted by email to editorjcas@ru.ac.za. All contributions are refereed. Only those receiving favourable recommendation will be accepted for publication.
All references to books, articles and statistical sources should be identified at the appropriate point in the text by surname of author, year of publication and pagination, all within parentheses: (Peires 1983: 259-60). If the author's name forms part of the text, only the date and page reference, in parentheses, need be given. With more than one reference to an author in the same year, distinguish them by use of letters (a,b) attached to the year of publication: (1986a). Quotations in the text should have double quotation marks. Indented, substantial quotations do not need any quotation marks. If a quote is more than three lines, it should be indented. Endnotes should be used only for substantive observations, should be numbered consecutively and placed at the end of the manuscript.

Contributors should follow the format for references as indicated below. List all items alphabetically by author's surname and initial, (providing the full list of multiple authors), date of publication, full title of book, place of publication and publisher. For journal articles provide author's surname and initial, date, full title of article and of journal, volume, number and page reference.
