Instructions for Authors

Aims and Scope

With a tradition of representing the highest quality scholarship in dance, Dance Chronicle focuses on dance history as emergent and alive in the present as well as in memory. Dance Chronicle publishes original research grounded in the values of historical research: rigorous documentation, substantiation of claims in evidence, clear analysis and interpretation, meticulous attribution of sources, and excellent writing. Dance Chronicle also maintains a lively tradition of publishing translations of primary-source documents, oral histories, and transcripts of seminal colloquia in order to make these resources available to a wider public.
Dance Chronicle is international in perspective and interdisciplinary in thrust, as indicated by its subtitle, Studies in Dance and the Related Arts, placing it at the forefront of dance history research. Articles address a wide variety of topics, including dance and music, theater, film, literature, visual arts, and aesthetics within a broad panorama of countries, cities, and venues.

From 1977 to 2007, George Dorris and Jack Anderson led the journal—the only one dedicated to dance history in the United States. Dance Chronicle is one of only three research series in dance studies in the United States and one of the leading journals in dance research worldwide.

Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts may be submitted electronically or in hard copy (3 copies, please), to either editor:
  • Lynn Matluck Brooks, Dance Program, Franklin & Marshall College, PO Box 3003, Lancaster, PA 17604-3003, lbrooks@fandm.edu;
  • Joellen A. Meglin, Dance Department, Temple University, 1700 N. Broad St., Suite 311, Philadelphia, PA 19122, jmeglin@temple.edu.
Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources, and for providing copies of such permissions. Authors are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

Manuscripts must be typewritten or printed, double-spaced in all parts (including block quotes and notes), and with margins of at least one inch all around. Dance Chronicle, which is published in English, follows the Chicago Manual of Style in formatting, citation, and other matters of writing and publication style. Each manuscript must be summarized in an abstract of not more than 100 words; the abstract should include three to five key words that will facilitate indexing and data retrieval.

Illustrations

Illustrations (line drawings, tables, figures, halftones, photographs, etc.) should be clean originals or, preferably, digital files (300 dpi or higher; EPS, TIFF, or PSD formats only; submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files). While color illustrations will be considered for publication, the author will have to bear the full cost of their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of prints deemed unacceptable. All illustrations should be provided with captions, submitted in a
separate file.

Offprints/Reprints

The corresponding author of each article will receive five complete copies of the issue in which the article appears. Requests for reprints should be directed to the Production Editor at Taylor & Francis.
