Australasian Journal of Philosophy
Instructions for Authors
The instructions below are specifically directed at authors who wish to submit a manuscript to the Australasian Journal of Philosophy. For general information, please visit the Publish With Us section of our website.
The Australasian Journal of Philosophy considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have not been published in whole or substantial part already, and that they are not under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who are found to fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which the Australasian Journal of Philosophy incurs and their papers will not be published.
Contributions to the Australasian Journal of Philosophy will be subjected to review by referees at the discretion of the Editorial Office.
Manuscript preparation
1. General guidelines
- Submissions must be in English and formatted to be double-spaced with margins of not less than 25mm (or one inch), an A4 page size, and automatic page numbering. The Oxford English Dictionary is the Journal's standard for spelling.
- Articles are normally no longer than 8,000 words, Discussions no longer than 2,000 words, of main text including bibliography. The Journal will consider longer papers, but, once these limits are exceeded, authors should bear in mind the editorial policy that the acceptance bar rises with increasing length.
- Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: cover page; title; abstract (no more than 350 words, and preferably no fewer than 200); keywords (3 to 6); main text; appendices (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list)..
- Section headings should be concise and numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals, using a decimal system for subsections.
- All the authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses on the cover page of the manuscript. If a paper is co-written, one author should be identified as the Corresponding Author. The cover page must be submitted as a separate document.
- Neither the name(s) of the author(s) nor any institutional affiliation may be shown in the paper itself, and all references to an author's own work(s) must be disguised (e.g. by being made in an impersonal and neutral form) or omitted. Extravagant acknowledgments of gratitude must likewise be omitted. Self-identifying references may be restored after the evaluation process is complete.
- For all manuscripts, non-discriminatory language is preferred. Sexist or racist terms should not be used unless they occur in quotations or as examples.
- When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark, authors must use the symbol ® or TM.
Full notes for contributors can be found at the Journal's website.
2. Style guidelines
- Consult the relevant page of the Journal's website.
3. Figures
- Please be sure that all imported scanned material is scanned at the appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for greyscale and 300 dpi for colour.
- Figures must be saved separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.
- All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
- Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
- The filename for a graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.
- Printed issues of the Journal use only greyscale; colour images can be used in the on-line version.
Please note that it is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Do not hesitate to contact our Production Department if you have any queries.
4. Reproduction of copyright material
Contributors are required to secure permission for the reproduction of any figure, table or extensive extract (more than fifty words) from the text of a source that is copyrighted or owned by a party other than Taylor & Francis or the contributor. This applies to direct reproduction as well as ‘derivative reproduction', where the contributor has created a new figure or table that derives substantially from a copyrighted source. Authors are themselves responsible for the payment of any permission fees required by the copyright owner. Copies of permission letters should be sent with the manuscript upon submission to the Editor(s).
5. Supplementary online material
Authors are welcome to submit animations, movie files, sound files or any additional information for online publication.
Manuscript submission
All submissions should be made online at the Australasian Journal of Philosophy Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account; the Journal's referees have had an account created for them in advance. Once logged on to the site, users should submit their papers via the Author Centre. Online user guides and access to a helpdesk are available on this website.
Manuscripts may be submitted in a limited range of standard formats, including .doc, .rtf, PostScript and .pdf. These files will be automatically converted into a PDF file for the review process. LaTeX files must be converted to PDF prior to submission because the submission interface is not able to convert LaTeX files into PDFs directly. Neither does it handle Microsoft Word 2007 (.docx) or later document formats, including other recent word-processing formats such as .odt. These restrictions may be overcome by using your word processor's "Save As" option to save your document as an older (.doc or .rtf) file type.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The MC interface does not reliably convert embedded fonts, for example, those which may be used for special characters such as logic symbols or Sanskrit characters. Papers which contain any such symbols must be submitted as .pdf files. Authors who do not take this precaution are warned that their texts may contain non-obvious errors which can seriously mislead referees.
Books for Review
Books for review should be sent to the Book Review Editor, Australasian Journal of Philosophy, M207: Philosophy, The University of Western Australia, 35 Stirling Highway, Crawley, WA 6009, Australia.
Book reviews themselves should be submitted via the Journal's Manuscript Central site, where the Book Review Editor will have created a slot for supply of the text in the user's Author Centre. Unsolicited reviews, which are not encouraged, must be submitted as new manuscripts.
Copyright and authors' rights
It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found at http://www.informaworld.com/authors_journals_copyright_position. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
Exceptions are made for Government employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties. We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.
Reprints
Free article access: Corresponding authors can receive 50 free reprints, free online access to their article through our website (www.informaworld.com) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Complimentary reprints are available through Rightslink® and additional reprints can be ordered through Rightslink® when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk
Page charges
There are no page charges to individuals or institutions.
iOpenAccess
Authors whose manuscripts have been accepted for publication have the option to pay a one-off fee of $3250 to make their article free to read online via the Australasian Journal of Philosophy website. Choosing this option also allows authors to post their article in an institutional or subject repository immediately upon publication.
