Aims & Scope
As Board members of the Journal of Southern African Studies, dedicated for over forty years to progressive scholarship on the whole of the southern African region, we wish to express our abhorrence at the recent attacks on immigrants from other parts of the African continent. We join with those who are calling for an end to the violence which has erupted in so many parts of the country and in solidarity with those who are seeking to provide aid and refuge for those in need.'

The Journal of Southern African Studies is an international publication for work of high academic quality on issues of interest and concern in the region of Southern Africa. It aims at generating fresh scholarly enquiry and rigorous exposition in the many different disciplines of the social sciences and humanities, and periodically organises and supports conferences to this end, sometimes in the region. It seeks to encourage inter-disciplinary analysis, strong comparative perspectives and research that reflects new theoretical or methodological approaches. An active advisory board and an editor based in the region demonstrate our close ties with scholars there and our commitment to promoting research in the region.
The region covered embraces South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Angola and Mozambique; and occasionally, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar and Mauritius.
Peer Review Statement
All research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editorial screening, followed by assignment to one of three editors with more specialised knowledge, and review by at least two other referees. Most papers will also be subject to final approval by the full editorial board.
