Instructions for Authors

How to Submit a Manuscript

Length: The maximum length of a paper should be 20 typed (3,000 to 5,000 words), double-spaced pages for submission.

Organization: Manuscripts usually consist of these parts: title, authors' names and institutional affiliations, abstract, introduction, body, conclusions, references, figures, and tables. Appendixes, acknowledgments, and a list of symbols are sometimes desirable.

The title should briefly and clearly cover the subject of the paper. An abstract (of about 200 words) should be self-explanatory and summarize the paper's essential points. The introduction should spell out the problem, briefly review the relevant previous work, and clearly state the purpose and significance of the paper.

The body, which gives the primary message of the paper in detail, may be broken down into sections. The contributions of the authors should be clearly stated. Appropriate figures and tables may be used to amplify the text discussion. Each should be numbered consecutively, using Arabic numerals (e.g., Figure 1, Figure 2, Table 1, Table 2, etc.). All figures and tables must be referred to in numerical order (i.e., do not refer to Figure 3 before Figure 2). Use Times Roman (or equivalent)12-point font for the text.

The conclusion should point out the significant conclusions that can be drawn from the data and/or analysis of the work. However, any limitations and advantages, applications of the results, and recommendations for further work are to be included in the body. Acknowledgments, if any, should be placed directly after the conclusion. If a list of symbols is included, this should be placed immediately after the Acknowledgements.

References to cited literature should be referred to in the text by author's last name and the year of publication. For example, Smith (2001) for single author papers, Patterson and Wagner (1997) for two-author papers, and Kamath et. al. (1993) for three or more coauthors. Place the references at the end of the paper, organized in alphabetical order. Use The Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition, as a guide to formatting references. References to unpublished work or to work not properly indexed should not be used. Some examples of references for a journal, book, edited book, and proceedings follow:

Transfer of Copyright:
All papers accepted for publication must be accompanied by a copyright release form signed by the author. This form is available from the editor.

Preparation and Submission of Manuscript and Illustrations: The complete paper must be typed, double-spaced, with 1” (25 mm) margins all around. The entire text, except the abstract, should be divided into sections. Manuscript pages should be numbered consecutively. At the review stage, all line drawings and graphs must be prepared using software and saved in standard format; legible copies or jpeg files (at least 500 dpi) of any photographs to be used should be included. Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints or files should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.

Particulate Science and Technology receives all manuscript submissions electronically via their ScholarOne Manuscripts website located at: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/UPST.  ScholarOne Manuscripts allows for rapid submission of original and revised manuscripts, as well as facilitating the review process and internal communication between authors, editors and reviewers via a web-based platform. For ScholarOne Manuscripts technical support, you may contact them by e-mail or phone support via http://scholarone.com/services/support/.  If you have any other requests please contact the journal at vmpuri@engr.psu.edu or mazumder@bu.edu.

Review and Final Acceptance: All manuscripts will be subjected to rigorous peer review procedures. The manuscripts, with reviewer(s) suggestions and comments, will be returned to the corresponding author, who will then be responsible for revising and resubmitting the manuscript for final approval. Labels for all line drawings and graphs must be large enough to be readable. The original drawings or good quality photographic prints may be put into place in the text or placed at the end of the text. Photographs should be good quality black and white glossies or at least 500 dpi jpeg format, planned to occupy not more than 1/2 of a page; suggested maximum size is 4” x 4” (10cm x 10 cm). Proper space should be allowed for in the manuscript, with the caption typed below; the photo itself should be provided in a separate envelope with the gigure number and top of the photo clearly marked on its back. The publisher reserves the right to reject art and request new artwork.

The author(s) are responsible for proofreading and for the technical accuracy of the paper. All final manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher. Please submit all information in electronic form. However, if photos are used, submit photos in a separate envelope.
