Instructions for Authors

Aims and Scope

The Journal of Jewish Education, the journal of the Network for Research in Jewish Education, is published quarterly with support from the Jewish Education Service of North America and the Mandel Foundation. The journal provides a unique interdisciplinary forum for considering the diverse research and scholarly issues in Jewish education including curriculum and instruction, teacher preparation, Jewish identity development, history and philosophy of Jewish education, and the linkage between Jewish and general education. The journal's scope ranges from early childhood through adult education, in any setting in which Jewish education occurs. Contributions to the journal address issues unique to Jewish education, as well as the application of research and thought from general education. Further, a variety of methodological approaches and formats are represented. This peer-reviewed journal provides qualitative and quantitative empirical research studies, reflections on Jewish education past and present, and discussion of theoretical aspects of Jewish education.

Submission of Manuscripts

All manuscripts submitted for consideration are reviewed by internal and external reviewers following traditional anonymous peer review procedures. Materials invited by the editor or editorial board are reviewed internally. Two versions of a manuscript are requested. One should be a complete version with author's name and involved institutions identified, just as it might be published. The second version should have author names and names of involved institutions, referenced anywhere in the document, suppressed.

Manuscripts are accepted as an e-mail attachment to JournalofJEd@aol.com. In the body of the e-mail please include the following information: title of article; a shortened version of the title of up to 50 character spaces, suitable for the running head; author(s), postal address(es); phone(s); fax(es); e-mail address(es); one-sentence bio(s) to be used in the journal if the article is accepted for publication and a 100-word abstract. Upon acceptance, authors are asked to transfer copyright to the NRJE and to attest that their articles have not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources. Prior to publication authors will be asked to provide permission from identified institutions to reference them by name.

Preparation of Manuscripts

The journal accepts manuscripts of between 25 and 40 pages, including references but not including tables. Manuscripts should be double-spaced and prepared using MS Word with pages numbered consecutively. Citations and general style of manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the APA Publication Manual, 5th ed. The Editors discourage the use of technical jargon, abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text. We encourage authors to minimize the use of underlining, parentheses, italics, and quotation marks for emphasis. Footnotes are discouraged. Manuscripts submitted with footnotes may be returned to the author for revision.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend.

Color Reproduction

Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Color art can be purchased for online only reproduction or for print + online reproduction. Color reprints can only be ordered if print + online reproduction costs are paid. Rates for color art reproduction are: Online Only Reproduction: $225 for the first page of color; $100 per page for the next three pages of color. A maximum charge of $525 applies. Print + Online Reproduction: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print.
