Instructions for Authors

ScholarOne Manuscripts
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

Submission of Manuscripts

Geomicrobiology receives all manuscript submissions electronically via its Manuscript Central Website, located at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/UGMB.

Manuscript Central allows for rapid submission of original and revised manuscripts, as well as facilitating the review process and internal communication between authors, editors, and reviewers via a web-based platform. For Manuscript Central technical support, you may contact them by e-mail or phone support via http://scholarone.com/services/support/. If you have any other requests, please contact the journal's Editor-in-Chief's office at pll2@cornell.edu.

Preparation of Manuscripts

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher.

All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher. All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively through-out the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of no more that 100 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text.

Affiliation

Include full names of authors, academic and/ or other professional affiliations, and the complete mailing address of the author to whom proofs and correspondence should be sent.

Style

All papers must follow the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual (CBE). Systeme International (SI) or modern metric units are used. Stable hydrogen, carbon and oxygen isotoperatio data should be reported in accordance with the official IUPAC recommendations found in Pure. Appl. Chem. vol. 66, pp. 273-276 and 2423-2444 (1994). Nonstandard abbreviations should be defined at first mention. Standard abbreviations (refer to the CBE Style Manual) do not require definition.

References

Citations in the text are by author(s) and date in parentheses. Full citations should be arranged alphabetically and must conform to the CBE Style Manual. Exclude references to theses, abstracts, unpublished data, personal communications, and manuscripts in preparation, submitted for publication, or in press. Reference to such sources should appear parenthetically in the text.

Examples:
Journal Article: Cloud PD, Tide RS, San DJ. 1974. Significance of the gunflint. Science 148:27–45.
Book: Ethed AE, Goodman AR. 1993. Biochemistry. New York: Dutton. 1429 p.
Book Chapter: Friedmann EI, Ocampo-Friedman R. 1984. Endolithic microorganisms in extreme dry environments: analysis of a lithobiotic microbial habitat. In: Klug JJ, Reddy CA, editors. erspectives in Microbial Ecology. 6th ed. Washington, DC: American Society for Microbiology. P 177–185.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
  • 300 dpi or higher
  • sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS or TIFF format only
  • submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Color Reproduction

Color art will be reproduced in color in the online publication at no additional cost to the author. Color illustrations will also be considered for print publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Please note that color reprints can only be ordered if print reproduction costs are paid. Print Rates: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets and files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.

Page Proofs

All proofs must be corrected and returned to the publisher within 48 hours of receipt. If the manuscript is not returned within the allotted time, the editor will proofread the article and it will be printed per his instruction. Only correction of typographical errors is permitted.
