GUIDELINES FOR CONTRIBUTORS

Statement of Purpose

Equity & Excellence in Education publishes scholarly research articles utilizing qualitative or quantitative methods and historical or descriptive essays that explore efforts to achieve educational equity and are contextualized within an appropriate literature review. We consider manuscripts on topics related to equity and social justice in K-12 or postsecondary in school systems, individual schools, classrooms, and/or the social justice factors that contribute to inequality in learning for students from diverse social backgrounds. This journal provides a record of social justice efforts designed to transform educational systems as well as intergroup interactions at all levels of schooling. We welcome suggestions for special issues or sections.

Specifications for Submissions

  • To submit a manuscript, please mail 1 typed copy and a CD with the manuscript saved as a Rich Text Format document. Include a separate title page with your name, address, telephone number, institutional affiliation, fax number, and your e-mail address.
  • If you are submitting to a special-themed issue, please indicate for which issue you intend the submission to be considered.
  • The first page of each copy of your manuscript should include your article's title and abstract, with no personal identifying information.
  • Manuscripts should be no longer than 7800 words, including all references and appendices, tables and figures.
  • In accordance with standard practice, we expect that manuscripts submitted to Equity & Excellence in Education are original, have not been published elsewhere, and are not under review by any other journal. We will accept submissions that have been previously posted on the Internet only if they are clearly labeled as working papers and include the posted date. (See Section 8.05 of the APA Manual).
  • Since manuscripts that meet the journal's Aims and Scope are sent on for external peer review, please be certain that your submission text and reference list are masked with regard to your authorship.
  • Authors should follow the 6th edition of the American Psychological Association Publication Manual guidelines for citations, references, organization, and ethics. Refer to APA guidelines to eliminate bias based on gender, sexual orientation, racial or ethnic group, disability, or age.

Social Groups and Language

We recognize that social identities and their accompanying names evolve within historical, geographical, and political contexts. We believe that every group has a right to name itself, and thus honor an author's preferred self-identification. We regard the following as acceptable or interchangeable: African American or Black, Indian or Native American, Latino or Hispanic, Asian or Asian American, White or European. We also recognize that certain terms are considered pejorative, and authors should consult the APA Publications Manual 5th edition for guidance about language bias and sensitivity. We prefer that named ethnicities be capitalized but not hyphenated. Racial designations, such as Black and White, are capitalized when used as proper nouns but not as adjectives (e.g., black communities, white teachers).

GUIDELINES FOR BOOK REVIEWS

We accept book reviews throughout the year that highlight recent contributions to the field of social justice education.
A useful book review should provide:
  • a brief summary of the topics addressed by the author(s)
  • reasons that the reviewer believes the book is of value to social justice educators
  • how this book furthers the literature in the field. This last point will necessitate the reviewer's locating this contribution within the existing literature by providing some other references to support the reviewer's contentions.
The editorial staff of Equity & Excellence in Education described our understanding of social justice education in Volume 35, Number 1 of our journal as follows:
There are … success stories of positive steps taken to reduce racial isolation, gender harassment, inequities in schools, and innovative programs that enhance multicultural classrooms and create more equitable schools. The persistent failures in schooling require our attention as researchers and practitioners, and the success stories beg to be recognized and tried again in other settings.

… the members of this editorial staff acknowledge the pervasive systems of domination and subordination that lead to inequality and inequity in our classrooms, schools, and universities, as well as to harmful social interactions between and among teachers and students, or students and their peers. Because of these concerns, we hope to pay careful attention to the ways in which social hierarchies of race and ethnicity, immigration status, language, religion, gender and sexual orientation, class, and disability interaction with each other to make up the complex interactions of unequal groupings within our schools.

We expect book reviews to comply with the guidelines for manuscript contributors (above).

Submission Format

Please submit a single copy of your review along with CD with the submission file saved in as a Rich Text Format document. We prefer book reviews to be between 800 and 1500 words, including all references.
