Instructions for Authors
Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to the Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Deborah L. Floyd at CCJRP@fau.edu. The Community College Journal of Research and Practice publishes and disseminates papers which report original research and scholarship. Manuscripts are accepted in two formats - full length (Scholarly and Research) and shorter length (Exchange).
Scholarly and research full length manuscripts should be concise yet sufficiently detailed to permit a critical peer review. Research and conceptual/scholarly papers are limited to 5,000-6,000 words, generally 15-20 pages or less, including references, but not including any tables and figures. Papers should contain an abstract, which should not exceed 250 words. Research manuscripts should conclude with a section on implications for practice stating what the implications of the research findings are to practitioners in the field and including any recommendations for change indicated by the research results. Scholarly papers should also address implications for practice and, where appropriate, future research and policy.
Thought provoking and scholarly short-length manuscripts with a focus on research and practical applications should be succinct, but also able to meet the test of external peer review. Manuscripts should not exceed five pages total and should include a brief abstract, description of the research or project, implications for practice and/or policy and research, and author reach information. This section, Exchange, features practical and thought provoking scholarship and research that serves as a catalyst for conversation and advances knowledge and understanding in the field of community college education.
Submission of Manuscripts
All manuscripts must be submitted electronically in MS Word, not PDF or WordPerfect. Figures, tables, references, and writing must conform to the specifications described in the latest version of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (currently the 6th edition, 2009). All parts of the manuscript must be typewritten in 12-point, Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with one inch margins on all sides. Manuscripts should be consecutively numbered throughout the paper on the upper right hand corner with a running header (shorter title) on the upper left hand corner. Other than the title page, author(s) names should not be included on manuscripts. Exchange manuscripts should include the name, title, mailing address, email address and phone numbers of the person to contact for additional information at the bottom of the last page (information that will be deleted prior to peer review). Any manuscripts that do not adhere to these style requirements will be returned for revision.
Title Page
All submissions must include a title page with the following:
- Manuscript Title
- Corresponding author name, institution, and contact information
- All other author names, institutions and contact information
- A statement that the manuscript has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere
- Date Submitted to the Editor-in-Chief
Abstract
An abstract, summarizing the article, should follow the title page on a separate page and before the body of the paper. The manuscript title should be at the top of the abstract page. Abstracts for the Scholarly and Research section should be between 150 to 250 words. Exchange abstracts should be no longer than 150 words in length.

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.
Tables and Figures
Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.
Illustrations
Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
- 300 dpi or higher
- sized to fit on journal page
- EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
- submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Color Reproduction
Color art will be reproduced in color in the online publication at no additional cost to the author. Color illustrations will also be considered for print publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Please note that color reprints can only be ordered if print reproduction costs are paid. Print Rates: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print. Good-quality color prints or files should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.
Aim and Scope
Timely reviews of subjects and books of interest to community and junior college administrators, teachers, counselors, researchers, and scholars in the social and behavioral sciences will be considered for publication. Letters to the editor will be published on approval by the editorial board. Announcements of general interest to the journal's readership will also be accepted for publication.
Reprints
Reprints of an individual article may be ordered from Rightslink. A link to the ordering form is included at the proofs stage.
Complimentary Policy
Authors for whom we receive a valid email address will be provided an opportunity to purchase reprints of individual articles, or copies of the complete print issue. These authors will also be given complimentary access to their final article on Taylor & Francis Online.
