Manuscript

The American Journal on Addictions publishes special overview articles, original clinical or basic research papers, clinical updates, book reviews, and letters within the area of addictions. Submission of material to this journal is understood to imply that it, or substantial parts of it, have not been published, accepted for publication, or submitted for consideration elsewhere. Upon acceptance of an article, author(s) will be required to assign copyright ownership in writing to the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.

Submission of Manuscripts

A cover letter must be included indicating that the material is intended for publication and specifying for which section of the journal it is to be considered (Special or Regular Articles, Book Reviews, Clinical Update Series, or Letters to the Editor). Articles of 8-10 pages, including references, are preferred. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. Upon acceptance, contributors are required to supply the final version of the material both in hardcopy and on computer diskette. A PC-based format using MS Word or WordPerfect is preferred. Questions about submitting material electronically can be directed to the Publisher.

Peer Review

All manuscripts, including those written at the invitation of the editor, are subject to peer review by at least two experts. Upon completion of the review (usually a 10-week process), the author(s) will be advised of the decision on the manuscript. If revisions are deemed necessary, this feedback will be based on and detailed from the reviews. Revised material is due in a timely fashion to avoid the necessity of returning to the peer review stage. At the discretion of the Editor, reviewer comments will be included with the return of rejected manuscripts. Please note that all reviews remain anonymous. Preparation of Manuscripts

Manuscripts, including tables, figures, and references, should be prepared in accordance with the American Medical Association Manual of Style, Ninth Edition. All manuscripts must be typed, double-spaced, on 8.5 x 11 inch paper with a 1-inch margin all around. Dot matrix printouts and others not conforming to these requirements will be returned unreviewed.

Title Page

The opening page should contain the article title; names and institutional affiliations of all authors; and complete mailing address (valid for the next 12 months), phone, fax, and e-mail address of the author to whom all correspondence should be sent.

Abstracts should be typed on a separate page and should not exceed 100 words. Author(s) should provide 3-4 keywords for use in listing article in the subject index published annually in the fall issue.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

• 300 dpi or higher
• sized to fit on journal page
• EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
• submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $1000.00. The next three pages with color are $500.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints or files should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.

References

Should be listed on separate pages following the text and should be typed double-spaced. References are numbered and listed in the order of appearance in the text; the appropriate reference number in parentheses follows the text citation. Do not arrange the reference list alphabetically. Be sure all references have been cited in the text. List all authors in the reference list unless there are more than six, in which case the names of the first three are used, followed by “et al.” Journal names should be abbreviated as they appear in Index Medicus; journals not currently indexed there should not be abbreviated. Authors should follow the guidelines in the American Medical Association Manual of Style, Ninth Edition.

Proofs

One set of page proofs is sent to the designated author. Proofs should be checked and re-turned within 48 hours.

Offprints and Complimentary Copies

The corresponding author of each article will receive 25 free reprints of the article. Additional reprints of the article may be ordered from Informa Healthcare by using the order form included with the page proofs.

Permissions

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources.
