Instructions for Authors

ScholarOne Manuscripts
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

The instructions below are specifically directed at authors who wish to submit a manuscript to Philosophical Magazine Letters. For general information, please visit our Author Services website.

Philosophical Magazine Letters is the rapid communications part of the highly respected Philosophical Magazine, which was first published in 1798. Its Editors consider for publication short and timely contributions in the field of condensed matter describing original results, theories and concepts relating to the structure and properties of crystalline materials, ceramics, polymers, glasses, amorphous films, composites and soft matter. Articles emphasizing experimental, theoretical and modelling studies on solids, especially those that interpret behaviour on a microscopic, atomic or electronic scale, are particularly appropriate.

Manuscripts are considered on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Philosophical Magazine Letters, that they have not been published already, and that they are not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Contributions to Philosophical Magazine Letters must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees at the discretion of the Editors.

By submitting a manuscript to Philosophical Magazine Letters authors are agreeing that CrossCheck software may be used to screen their work for unoriginal material.

Manuscript preparation

1. General guidelines

  • Papers are accepted only if written in English. American spelling is acceptable, but should be consistent throughout the article.
  • If authors require support to improve the standard of English in their article before submission, details of resources available to authors can be found here.
  • The total length of manuscripts submitted to Philosophical Magazine Letters should not exceed eight pages, including figures, references etc., when printed in the journal. The number of figures should not normally exceed four. Authors should include a word count with their manuscript. As a guide, assuming four average size figures, this should not normally exceed 3,000 words, including title, authors and their affiliations, figure captions and references.
  • Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; appendices (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list).
  • Abstracts of 50 - 250 words are required for all papers submitted.
  • Section headings should be concise and numbered sequentially, using a decimal system for subsections.
  • All authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses on the cover page of the manuscript. One author should be identified as the Corresponding Author.
  • For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.
  • Authors must adhere to SI units.
  • When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark, authors must use the symbol ® or TM.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a means of making your article more visible to anyone who might be looking for it. Please consult our guidance here.

2. Style guidelines

3. Templates

  • LaTeX template. Please save the LaTeX template to your hard drive and open it for use as a template from the directory to which it was saved.
  • Word templates. Please open and read the instruction document first, as this will explain how to save and then use the template. Select the Word template that is most suitable for your operating system.

If you are not able to use the template via the links or if you have any other queries, please contact authortemplate@tandf.co.uk

4. Figures

  • It is in the author's interest to provide high quality figures with appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for greyscale and 300 dpi for colour. Individual figure files should not exceed 3Mb.
  • Figures should be uploaded separately from the text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.
  • Files should be submitted in one of the following formats: JPEG, TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).
  • All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labeled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
  • Figure captions should be included in the file containing the text of the paper, following the reference list.
  • The filename for a graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.

5. Colour

There are a limited number of colour pages within the annual page allowance. Authors should restrict their use of colour in figures to situations where it is necessary for reasons of clarity. In cases when non-essential colour is used, figures will be printed in greyscale but will appear in colour in the online edition of the Journal. However, such figures must be unambiguous in their meaning when reproduced in greyscale in the printed version.

6. Reproduction of copyright material

As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). For further information and FAQs, please see http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/permission.asp

7. Supplementary online material

Authors are welcome to submit animations, movie files, sound files or any additional information for online publication.

Manuscript submission

All submissions should be made online at the Philosophical Magazine Letters ScholarOne Manuscripts site. New users should first create an account. Once logged on to the site, submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Online user guides and access to a helpdesk are available on this website.

Manuscripts should be submitted in standard format, using Microsoft Word or LaTeX. These files will be automatically converted into a PDF file for the review process.

Authors should note that during the submission process they will be required to provide a statement of up to three sentences (150 words maximum) summarizing the state of scientific knowledge on the subject before the study was undertaken and the ways in which their work advances this knowledge.

Copyright and authors' rights

It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found at http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/copyright.asp. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.

Exceptions are made for certain Governments' employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties. We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.

Reprints

Corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through our website, Taylor & Francis Online. Reprints of articles published in the Journal can be purchased through Rightslink® when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk

Open access

Taylor & Francis Open Select provides authors or their research sponsors and funders with the option of paying a publishing fee and thereby making an article permanently available for free online access – open access – immediately on publication to anyone, anywhere, at any time. This option is made available once an article has been accepted in peer review. Full details of our Open Access programme.
