Instructions for Authors

ScholarOne Manuscripts
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research welcomes contributions from across the full range of social research disciplines with focus on the relationship between persons with disabilities and their environments. The journal is published on behalf of the Nordic Network on Disability Research. Situated in the Nordic context with an international in scope, the editors welcome contributions from all countries, and from across all disciplines within a disability research context.

Authors submitting a paper do so with the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere, and has been read and approved by all authors. The work should not be published elsewhere in any language without the written consent of the publisher. The articles published in this journal are protected by copyright, which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all articles printed in the journal.

Language and file format
Submitted manuscripts must be written in English, please be concise about spelling, and use British spelling throughout the whole manuscript. The authors are themselves responsible for ensuring a correct use of the English language. See further advice under 'Style Guides' below. Authors are encouraged to send manuscripts for language review before submitting the paper online.

All submissions should be made online at the Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research ScholarOne Manuscripts site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Online user guides and access to a helpdesk are available on this website.

Authors should prepare and upload their manuscript with a separate title page to facilitate a double-blind peer-review process. The manuscript file should also be cleaned from anything that might reveal author identity. The title page should be uploaded separate from the main manuscript text. The abstract text should be included in the main manuscript file to be evaluated by the referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the title page as “Title page (including author names)” and the main manuscript file as 'Main Document (author information removed)'. All files should be uploaded as styled Word files. No PDF files can be considered for publication. The system will automatically create a PDF file of the manuscript for the purpose of peer-review.

All material, including figure and table legends and references, must be typed double-spaced in a standard ISO A4 (210_297mm) size or United States letter size (8.5_11 inches) Word document. The left margin must be at least 40 mm and the right margins 25 mm.

The maximum allowed manuscript length is 7,000 words including abstract and title page. References, figures and tables does not need to be included in the word count. Longer manuscripts may be rejected without peer-review due to space restraints of the printed journal. Any exceptions to the rule needs to be confirmed by the Editor before submission. It is recommended to use a 12 point size standard font (for example Times New Roman). Avoid footnotes and appendices: incorporate them into the text. Use no more than 3 levels of headings, clearly indicating the level of each with formatting. Fancy or personal lay-out of submitted manuscripts is not accepted.

Title page and Abstract
The title page should contain the title of the article, full names of the authors and their institutional affiliations, key words, a running title not to exceed 60 characters, and the name and complete mailing address (including postal code), e-mail and telephone numbers of the author responsible for correspondence. Please note that the title page should be uploaded as a separate file in the online submission system to ensure anonymous peer-review.

The abstract text should be included in the first page of the main document as well as entered in the designated area in the online submission form, and consist of less than 150 words.

Abbreviations and terminology: Abbreviations should be held to a minimum. Names of groups, impairments, services and organisations should usually not be abbreviated. Authors should not use terminology that some people find offensive (except historical articles which can use the terminology of the period discussed). The journal does not have preferences with regard to current terminological debates, for instance whether “disabled people” is better than “people with disabilities”, nor the proper use of the impairment-disability-distinction. Do however notice that the term handicap is omitted from the WHO terminology. Authors do generally have an obligation to pay attention to terminological debates within social disability research.

Style guidelines
Description of the Journal's article styleQuick guide
Description of the Journal's reference style, Quick guide
Please use British spelling, as in the Oxford Dictionary (e.g. colour, organize), and punctuation. Use single quotation marks with double within if needed.
If you have any questions about references or formatting your article, please contact authorqueries@tandf.co.uk (please mention the journal title in your email).

Word templates
Word templates are available for this journal. If you are not able to use the template via the links or if you have any other template queries, please contact authortemplate@tandf.co.uk

Tables and illustrations: Type each table on a separate sheet. The legends for tables and figures should be self-explanatory. Tables and figures should be numbered with Arabic numerals. Give due attention to the proportions of the printed page. Indicate the approximate location desired in the text.

Illustrations should be professionally drafted and submitted in final form as digital files suitable for print reproduction. They must be distinctive enough to allow for substantial reduction in size without loss of clarity, the lettering being reducible to 1.5-2 mm in height. It is also very important that authors ensure that they have permission to use any images considered for publication. Further guidelines on how to seek permission to reuse images and figures can be found at our Author Services website (see link at the bottom of this page).

Graphic elements should be kept as separate files in EPS-, PDF, or TIFF-format when uploaded. These formats guarantee that the quality of the graphic is good throughout the publishing process if provided with sufficient resolution. Photo illustrations should be rendered with an image resolution of at least 300 DPI and please use CMYK colour conversion. Halftones and colour photos should be uploaded as separate files along with the main manuscript document in the online submission tool. If the author wishes to print in black and white, the originals should be black and white to ensure preserved quality when printed.

Final manuscript proofs are sent via email as a PDF-file to the first author only. The author(s) must pay the cost of major alterations in the proofs, so please ensure to follow the instructions for authors closely and make as many alterations as possible in the draft versions of the manuscript before final acceptance. More information on how to check you proofs can be found at the Author Services website here: http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/production/checkingproofs.asp

iOpenAccess

Authors whose manuscripts have been accepted for publication in certain journals have the option to pay a one-off fee to make their article free to read online via the journal website. Choosing this option also allows authors to post their article in an institutional or subject repository immediately upon publication.
