Norwegian Archaeological Review
Instructions for Authors

This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.
The instructions below are specifically directed at authors who wish to submit a manuscript to Norwegian Archaeological Review. For general information, please visit the Author Services section of our website.
Norwegian Archaeological Review consider all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Norwegian Archaeological Review, that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Norwegian Archaeological Review incurs and their papers will not be published.
Contributions to Norwegian Archaeological Review must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees at the discretion of the Editorial Office. Articles based upon results from all parts of the world are welcomed. Norwegian Archaeological Review organizes discussions where invited comments on chosen articles are published along with the author's reply. The Journal is also receptive to opinions and comments on a wider scope of archaeological themes, e.g. articles in other journals, monographs and conferences.
Taylor & Francis make every effort to ensure the accuracy of all the information (the “Content”) contained in its publications. However, Taylor & Francis and its agents and licensors make no representations or warranties whatsoever as to the accuracy, completeness or suitability for any purpose of the Content and disclaim all such representations and warranties whether express or implied to the maximum extent permitted by law. MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
- General guidelines
- Papers are accepted in English with either American or British English spelling or punctuation. It is the author's responsibility to ensure correct spelling and grammar in their text. Authors not proficient in the English language are recommended to consult a language expert before submitting their manuscript.
- A typical article will not exceed 20 pages including tables and figures (main text ca. 8,000 words). Papers that greatly exceed this will be critically reviewed with respect to length. Authors should include a word count with their manuscript.
- Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; appendices (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list).
- Abstracts of maximum 200 words are required for all papers submitted.
- Each paper should have at least five keywords, noted clearly on the title page.
- The main text should be organized with a clear hierarchy of up to three levels of headings and subheadings.
- End notes (if necessary) should be signalled by superscript Arabic numbers in the main text and listed at the end of the text.
- Reviews and comments are structured in much the same way as the articles, but without any abstract ahead of the main text. Due to the short length of reviews and comments (1,600 words), do not use headings other than the title.
- All the authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses on the cover page of the manuscript. One author should be identified as the Corresponding Author.
- For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.
- Authors must adhere to SI units.
- When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark, authors must use the symbol ® or TM.

3. Figures and Illustrations
- It is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please be sure that all imported scanned material is scanned at the appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for grayscale and 300 dpi for colour.
- Figures must be saved separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the main manuscript file.
- Image files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application.
- All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. Fig. 1, Fig. 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. Fig. 1(a), Fig. 1(b)).
- Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
- The filename for a graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Fig1, Fig2a.
4. Colour
The Journal has no free colour pages within its annual page allowance. Authors of accepted papers who propose publishing figures in colour in the print version should consult Taylor & Francis at proof stage to agree a financial contribution to colour reproduction costs. Figures that appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal will appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied.
5. Permissions
As an author, you are required to secure permission to reproduce any proprietary text, illustration, table, or other material, including data, audio, video, film stills, and screenshots, and any supplementary material you propose to submit. This applies to direct reproduction as well as “derivative reproduction” (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). The reproduction of short extracts of text, excluding poetry and song lyrics, for the purposes of criticism may be possible without formal permission on the basis that the quotation is reproduced accurately and full attribution is given.
For further information and FAQs, please see http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/permission.asp
Copies of permission letters should be sent with the manuscript upon submission to the editors.
6. Supplementary online material
Authors are welcome to submit animations, movie files, sound files or any additional information for online publication. Such material should be uploaded through the online submission system together with the manuscript files.
All submissions should be made online at the Norwegian Archaeological Review ScholarOne Manuscripts site (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/sarc) New users should first create an account. Once logged on to the site, submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Online user guides and access to a helpdesk are available on this website.
Manuscripts may be submitted in any standard format, including Word, PostScript and PDF. These files will be automatically converted into a PDF file for the review process. LaTeX files should be converted to PDF prior to submission because ScholarOne Manuscripts is not able to convert LaTeX files into PDFs directly. This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type. COPYRIGHT AND AUTHORS' RIGHTS
It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found at http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/copyright.asp. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
Exceptions are made for certain Governments' employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties. We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.
AUTHOR PROOFS
All corresponding authors are responsible for the final proofing of their manuscript, and no manuscripts will be published without final approval (and a signed copyright agreement) from the author. Proofs are sent as PDFs through the Publisher's online system, and it is preferred if corrections are submitted online. Further instructions will be sent to the corresponding author at that stage. Please note only minor adjustments are allowed at proofing stage. Papers that require substantial editing may incur a fee to the Author.
For further advice on proofing, please look at our Author Services site: http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/production/checkingproofs.asp

Corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through our website, Taylor & Francis Online. Reprints of articles published in the Journalcan be purchased through Rightslink® when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk.
