Instructions for Authors

1. Editorial Policy
Contributions will be welcomed from all with an interest in gender. Two issues each year have a main theme. Please see Future Issues section in the current issue of the journal for details of these themes. We should be particularly interested to consider articles that relate to these topics, or pieces that respond to articles that we publish. The third issue is an Open Forum issue, carrying articles on a variety of topics. Please note that submissions that are under consideration elsewhere will not be accepted. Neither the editors nor the publishers accept responsibility for the views expressed by authors.

2. Submission of manuscripts
Manuscripts can be submitted either as e-mail attachments or in hard copy by post. If the latter, please supply three copies. Please include contributor's name, address, contact telephone number/s and e-mail address, an approximate word-count and biographical details for the Notes on Contributors section. In articles submitted as hard copy, contact details should be on one separate page; the author's name should not appear on the text to allow for the article to be sent anonymously for peer review. The text should be double-spaced with ample margins and all pages numbered. The average length of articles will be between four and five thousand words, but shorter and longer pieces will be accepted. If you have been commissioned to write an article, please stick to the word-length agreed. Please clear permissions for quotations and illustrations before submitting articles. We welcome illustrations, but make sure that any illustrations or photographs are good quality black-and-white, and enclose photocopies as well as the originals (either hard copy or electronic), and provide the necessary captions and credits.

3. Style
We welcome accessible and lively writing. All contributors are asked to remember that, as this is an interdisciplinary journal, they should make technicalities clear to those outside their areas. We have an international readership, so please make sure abbreviations etc. will be generally understood. In print articles will be subdivided approximately every 750 or 1,000 words by a space and raised capitals or by subheadings; it is helpful if contributors provide subheadings or indicate where they would like subdivisions to come. Quotation marks should be single, with double for quotations within quotations. Quotations of more than about three lines (c. 45 words or more) should be separated from the context and indented without quotation marks. Single words or short phrases in foreign languages not used as direct quotations should be italicized (or underlined to indicate italicization) unless the word has passed into more general English usage, e.g. genre, leitmotif, role, status quo. Italics should also be used for titles of books, films, television programmes, newspapers, magazines, journals, very long poems, operas and works of art and quotation marks for titles of essays, short poems and chapters. For page references use p. and pp., e.g. p. 76, pp. 187-90, pp. 88ff.

4. Notes and references
Notes should be very brief and kept to a minimum. In the typescript they should be placed together at the end of the article. Note numbers in the main text should be superscript rather than bracketed, and placed outside punctuation. When in print notes should appear in the margin, so they should only be used for citation or minimal extra comment; lengthy notes may have to be cut by the editors.
Citations in notes should take the following forms:

Marginal notes are our preferred form for references. However, since space for these notes is limited, if it is essential that your work is heavily referenced (i.e. more than two or three notes per page or 500 words) please use the surname of author and date (and if applicable page numbers) in brackets within the text, with full details in an alphabetical bibliography at the end of the article. The style used here should be:

5. Reviews
Please provide a title, and give the titles of the books reviewed at the head of the article in the following style:

Nancy Chodorow, Feminism and Psychoanalytic Theory, Cambridge: Polity Press, 2003, £25, and Teresa Brennan (ed.), Between Feminism and Psychoanalysis, London: Routledge, 2002, £8.95 pbk.

Remember the price is essential information. If there is a hardback and paperback price please give both. Please avoid the use of notes in reviews.

6. Proofs
All contributors will be sent proofs. Please return by the date requested, as otherwise publication may have to go ahead without your amendments. Proofs should be read for typesetters' errors. Other changes at this stage will be subject to editorial discretion.

7. Copyright
It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis [or Society name if journal is not owned by us]. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from Taylor & Francis, provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as original source of publication, and that Taylor & Francis is notified so that our records show that its use is properly authorised. Authors retain a number of other rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies documents. These policies are referred to at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authorrights.pdf for full details. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.

8. Gratis copies
Authors of articles can now receive their published article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to fifty copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Alternatively, authors can receive the traditional fifty offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all authors of articles after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at a preferential rate.

9. Free article access: Corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through our website (www.informaworld.com) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article.
