Instructions for Authors

Safundi: The Journal of South African and American Studies is a peer-reviewed quarterly academic journal that analyses the United States and South Africa from an international, transnational, and/or comparative perspective and seeks to understand each country in relation to the other.

Although new comparative and transnational research forms the core of the journal, Safundi also publishes articles specifically addressing one country, provided the research is of interest to an international audience. The Editorial Board will consider submissions relating to other countries in southern Africa and the Americas, as well as to other parts of the world that allow for broader comparative insights.

Articles that Safundi publishes are academic in nature. Intelligent, exploratory essays are also welcomed. We encourage interdisciplinary perspectives on a wide range of topics. Contributions should generally be 7000 to 10,000 words, but the editors will consider submissions of any length. Although most Safundi reviews are solicited, the editors will consider unsolicited reviews. The reviewed work should appear at the top of the submission. Safundi very rarely publishes previously printed material.

Submissions: All Safundi articles should be submitted as a Microsoft Word Document (.doc) or in Rich Text Format (.rtf) and sent as an attachment to Andrew Offenburger at offenburger@safundi.com. Submissions should address the United States and/or South Africa from an international, transnational, or comparative perspective. Submissions specifically addressing both countries receive priority.

The content of articles should not infringe any existing copyright. If any table or figure, or more than a few lines of the text from previously published work or unpublished theses are included in the manuscript the author must obtain written permission for republication from the copyright holder; the original source should be clearly referenced and acknowledged.

Style:

Abbreviations

  • Spell out acronyms on first use, indicating the acronym in parenthesis immediately thereafter.
  • In general, use a full point for lower case abbreviations (et al., ibid., ed.), but no full point for upper case abbreviations (US, UN, Washington, DC).
  • Do not use full points after abbreviations if the final letter of the abbreviation is the final letter of the word (e.g. Ltd, Dr, Mr, Mrs, edn, eds, but vol., ed.)

Capitalization

  • only capitalize group identifiers when they refer to a nationality or geographic region: for example, "South Africans," "black Americans," "Native Americans," and "coloureds."

Commas

  • Use a serial (Oxford) comma (red, white, and blue).

Dates

  • Write in the form 1 June 2004, 1990s, twenty-first century

Numbers

  • Spell out all numbers, one through one hundred; numerals above that, except for round (easily written) numbers, such as fifty thousand, one hundred thousand, etc. The only exception to this rule is a paragraph where there are a bunch of numbers that make the spellings cumbersome...then all numerals.
  • 500 km (space), £100 billion, 18 percent (but use % in figures and tables).
  • Omit repeated numbers in inclusive number ranges: pp.22-3, 256-7

Dashes

  • Use unspaced en dashes (-) for ranges (1939-1945).
  • Use unspaced em dashes (--) when offsetting text within a sentence.

Headings
A HEADING Bold, initial caps of main words, range left
B HEADING Italics, initial caps of main words, range left
C HEADING. Italics, initial cap only, full point after heading, range left, text runs on         D HEADING. indented, italics, initial cap only, full point, text runs on

Hyphens
In most cases, follow the dictionary or the author's usage if it has been consistently applied. Otherwise, in general:

  • Hyphenate: compound adjectives part-time course, except where doing so adds nothing to the clarity; numbers/fractions when written in full Forty-five, two-thirds.
  • Don't hyphenate: -ly adverbs fully operational; multiple words used as nouns day off; most prefixes, except where the word would be ambiguous or overly long.
  • The phrase "African American" is only hyphenated when used as an adjective.

Quotations

  • Double quote marks, single within
  • Follow "American style" for the placement of punctuation marks-ie, in most cases, inside the closing quote mark.

Spelling

  • US spelling used throughout. The one exception to this rule is the word "coloured" when identifying what many historical texts refer to as "coloured" South Africans.

Footnotes and References. Safundi uses the humanities system as explained in the Chicago Manual of Style. This consists of brief citations in footnotes in the text (e.g. Smith, East towards Home, 34.) and a list of references at the end of the text giving full details of each work cited.
