Instructions for Authors

This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.
Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text including the manuscript title, institutional affiliation(s) of the author(s), the word count of the manuscript (including footnotes, but excluding references), an abstract (150 words or less), a short biographical statement about each author (75 words or less), 3-6 keywords that reflect the manuscript's content, author contact details (including email and full postal addresses), and the name of the corresponding author who will check proofs and receive offprints. When uploading their files, authors should define this non-anonymous version as “File not for review”.
The second version of the manuscript should have all information identifying the author removed to allow it to be sent anonymously to referees. This file should be defined as “Main Document.”
If tables and/or figures form part of the manuscript, both uploaded versions of the paper should include these items in the desired position within the text, along with any necessary captions. Authors may, if preferred, provide low resolution versions of tables/figures for ease of submission. Should the manuscript be accepted, source files for all table/figures (see further note below) will be required before the paper enters production.
Authors should ensure that their manuscript is in keeping with the Journal's editorial statement (see Aims and Scope). Manuscripts submitted should be original, not under review by any other publication and not published elsewhere (see Copyright section below). All pages should be numbered. Sponsorship of research reported (e.g. by research councils etc.) should be declared.
Non-native English speakers will be expected to have their manuscripts proof-read and edited by a native English speaker prior to final submission.
Tables and figures. Final versions of all tables/figures should not be included as part of the text but should be uploaded as additional files. Tables and figures should be numbered consecutively by Arabic numerals and their approximate positions should be indicated in the manuscript. Please supply artwork for figures in finished form as separate, clearly labelled files. Figures may be supplied in TIFF, JPEG or EPS format; a minimum resolution of 300 dots per inch is required. All figures should be suitable for reproduction as supplied and will not normally be redrawn by the publisher. Captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed on a separate page. Captions should include keys to any symbols used.

Copyright. The Journal of the Royal Musical Association considers manuscripts for publication on the understanding that they have been submitted only to JRMA and that they have not already been published or accepted for publication in any language, either in whole or in part. Submission of a manuscript grants JRMA first rights of publication. If the author has concerns with regard to this principle, s/he should contact the editor for advice before submission and disclose full details of any previous publication.
It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Royal Musical Association. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate.
As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). For further information and FAQs, please see http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/permission.asp
