Instructions for Authors

1. Submissions

Submissions are invited on all aspects of international urban planning history. Those of a comparative or thematic nature or raising methodological issues are welcome. No historical period is excluded. All submissions are peer reviewed in a ‘double-blind' peer reviewing process.

Articles for submission should be sent by email in the first instance, to be followed by one hard copy and disc copy on acceptance for publication, to the following:

a. Papers of 8,000-10,000 words maximum (inclusive of endnotes) to Helen Meller, School of History, University of Nottingham, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK. Email: helen.meller@nottingham.ac.uk

b. Papers on the Americas, to Robert Fairbanks, Department of History, University of Texas at Arlington, Arlington TX 76019, USA. Email: fairbank@uta.edu

c. Short 'research in progress' papers (3,000-4,000 words inclusive of endnotes) and other material for the International Planning History Society section to Christine Garnaut, School of Art, Architecture and Design, University of South Australia, Adelaide, South Australia 5001, Australia. Email: Christine.Garnaut@unisa.edu.au

Books for review should be sent to Florian Urban, Head of Architectural History and Urban Studies, Mackitosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art, 167 Renfrew Street, Glasgow, G3 6RQ, UK. Email: f.urban@gsa.ac.uk

All submissions are refereed in a 'double-blind' refereeing process. Neither the referees nor the author(s) may know each other's identity.

2. Manuscript preparation

a. The text should be double-spaced throughout on one side only of A4 paper. All references should be put in endnotes. Tables should be included at the end of the manuscript. Up to 10 illustrations are allowed for each article in the main section; up to 5 for the IPHS section. For full details of style, see below.

b. The title page should contain the full title, the name(s) of the author(s), and their full addresses and a running title of not more than 75 characters and spaces.

c. An abstract not exceeding 200 words should be included, followed by up to 10 key words.

d. Authors should submit separately brief biographical details of not more than 100 words.

e. Search engine optimization (SEO) is a means of making your article more visible to anyone who might be looking for it. Please consult our guidance here.

3. Illustrations and figures

a. Illustrations must accompany the manuscript but should not be included in the text. All photographs, diagrams, charts and graphs (but not tables) should follow the same numerical sequence and be shown as Figure1, Figure 2 etc. Position of all illustrations etc. should be indicated in the text. The highest resolution images should be used for best quality reproduction (at least 300 dpi for photographs and 800 dpi for line drawings). These should be sent on CD.

b. Captions for all illustrations and tables and an acknowledgement to the copyright holder should be listed on a separate sheet. It is the author's responsibility to ensure the proper permissions are obtained.

4. Proofs and free article access

a. Proofs should be corrected and returned to the Publisher within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted. The difficulty and expense involved in making amendments at proof stage make it essential for authors to prepare their manuscripts carefully: any alterations to the original text are strongly discouraged.

b. Corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through our website and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Reprints of articles published in this journal can be purchased through Rightslink® when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk

5. Copyright

Submission of a paper to Planning Perspectives will be taken to imply that it represents original, unpublished work, not under consideration for publication elsewhere. On submission of a manuscript, authors will be sent a form to transfer copyright to the Publisher.

It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found at http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/copyright.asp. Exceptions are made for certain Governments' employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties. We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.

As an author, you are required to secure permission to reproduce any proprietary text, illustration, table, or other material, including data, audio, video, film stills, and screenshots, and any supplementary material you propose to submit. This applies to direct reproduction as well as “derivative reproduction” (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). The reproduction of short extracts of text, excluding poetry and song lyrics, for the purposes of criticism may be possible without formal permission on the basis that the quotation is reproduced accurately and full attribution is given. For further information and FAQs, please see http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/permission.asp
