Instructions for Authors

Instructions for Authors

We are pleased to receive articles of between 1000 and 5,000 words from anyone who shares NAPCE's aims and ideals.

Articles of a theoretical nature, and those reporting research or engaging in scholarly debate, are always welcome. However, articles which suggest practical ideas for improving what schools do are equally welcome. The journal encourages teachers, parents, governors and students who have not previously written for publication to share their experiences and their views with others. If you have an idea for an article, please contact the editor who will happily give advice on how this might be developed.

The Editor also welcomes proposals for special issues.

All submissions should be made online at the Pastoral Care in Education Manuscript Central site (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/rped). New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Submissions must be accompanied by an abstract of up to 250 words: a short statement that briefly details the essential information of the paper, its aims, methods, results and conclusions. Authors are also required to select 3-5 keywords that reflect the content of their manuscript, eg. Schools, emotional well-being, care, counselling. The keywords selected will help the editorial office identify appropriate reviewers for each manuscript.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text and when uploading this file, authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review.” The second version of the manuscript should have all information identifying the author removed from the file, to allow it to be sent anonymously to referees.  This file should be defined as the “Main Document.”

Submissions should be double-spaced. Footnotes should be avoided where possible.

Articles submitted to Pastoral Care in Education should not be under consideration by any other journal, or have been published elsewhere, and the letter accompanying the submission of any manuscript should contain a clear statement to this effect.

Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be submitted as separate files and not included as part of the main manuscript. Tables and Figures should be numbered consecutively by Arabic numerals.  The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript.

Figures. Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher.

Citations of other work should be limited to those strictly necessary for the argument. Any quotations should be brief, and accompanied by precise references.

References should be indicated in the typescript by giving the author's name, with the year of publication in parentheses, as detailed in the APA style guide. If several papers by the same author(s) and from the same year are cited, a, b, c, etc. should be put after the year of publication. The references should be listed in full at the end of the paper in standard APA format. For example:

For books:
Helfer, M.E., Keme, R.S., & Drugman, R.D. (1997). The battered child (5th ed.). Chicago: University of Chicago Press.

For articles:

For chapters within books:
O'Neil, J.M., & Egan, J. (1992). Men's and women's gender role journeys: Metaphor for healing, transition, and transformation. In B.R. Wainrib (Ed.), Gender issues across the life cycle (pp. 107-123). New York: Springer.

Retrieved August 24, 2000, from Columbia University, Institute for Learning Technologies Web site: http://www.ilt.columbia.edu/publications/papers/newwine1.html

Titles of journals and names of publishers, etc. should not be abbreviated. Acronyms for the names of organisations, examinations, etc. should be preceded by the title in full.

Notes should be indicated in the typescript by numbers and listed at the end of the article before the references under the heading Notes, in numerical sequence.

Proofs will be sent to authors if there is sufficient time to do so. They should be corrected and returned to the Editor within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.

Early Electronic Offprints - Corresponding authors can receive 50 free reprints, free online access to their article through our website (www.informaworld.com) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Copyright - It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or licence the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to National Association for Pastoral Care in Education. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from Taylor & Francis, provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as the original source of publication, and that Taylor & Francis is notified so that our records show that its use is properly authorised.

Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found at www.informaworld.com/authors_journal_copyright_position. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
