International Journal of Heritage Studies
Instructions for Authors

This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.
Instructions for Authors
The views expressed in the International Journal of Heritage Studies are those of the authors, and do not necessarily coincide with those of the editor or the editorial advisory board.
Length. Articles should not normally exceed 6000 words in length inclusive of the notes.
All submissions should be made online at the International Journal of Heritage Studies ScholarOne Manuscripts site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Online user guides and access to a helpdesk are available on this website.
Format. Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript in Microsoft Word. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review”. This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type. Please keep macros and formatting to a minimum.
Other submissions. The editor wishes to encourage articles which are of a more speculative nature, and especially those from practitioners in the field, often precluded from producing detailed research articles. Such articles should be clearly different from refereed research articles in tone of language. They do not normally contain an abstract nor many endnotes.
Book reviews. The reviews editor is Steve Watson. Suggestions for books to be reviewed should be directed to him by e-mail.
Style. This interdisciplinary journal aims to be accessible to a range of readers from different disciplines, specialisations and areas of expertise. Discussions of theoretical and methodological issues should therefore be undertaken in a clear and open style, avoid jargon and explain unusual and complex technical concepts.
Style guidelines
Description of the Journal's article style, Quick guide
Description of the Journal's reference style, Quick guide
Please use British spelling (e.g. colour, organise) and punctuation. Use single quotation marks with double within if needed. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the readership, jargon is to be avoided. Simple sentence structures are of great benefit to readers for whom English is a second language.
This journal requires a short paragraph of biographical details for all contributors. This should include an address and, usually, an email address. This should not exceed 50 words. Authors should also indicate how they wish their names to appear. The custom is without titles, one forename plus surname, but authors may vary this.
If you have any questions about references or formatting your article, please contact authorqueries@tandf.co.uk
Word templates are available for this journal. If you are not able to use the template via the links or if you have any other template queries, please contact authortemplate@tandf.co.uk
Illustrations
- Figures should be produced as near to the finished size as possible.
- Figure files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript)
- The approximate position of tables and illustrations should be indicated in the paper. All illustrations, photographs, diagrams, maps etc. (but not tables) should follow the same numerical sequence and be shown as Figure 1, Figure 2 etc. Authors should indicate which pictures are absolutely essential, and give a priority list for the remainder.
- Figures that appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal will appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied. As only black and white is published, colour pictures are usefully passed through a photocopier to check for tonal values.
Please note that it is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please do not hesitate to contact our Production Department if you have any queries.
Captions. All illustrations should be accompanied by a caption, which should include the figure numbers, and an acknowledgement to the holder of the copyright. It is the author's responsibility to ensure that proper permissions are obtained.
Abstract. An abstract is required and should not exceed 200 words in length and should concentrate on the significant findings and/or arguments. Apart from its value to abstracting services, it should make a case for the article to be read by people from different disciplines.
Search engine optimization (SEO). SEO is a means of making your article more visible to anyone who might be looking for it. Please consult our guidance here.
Endnotes. Explantory endnotes are welcome. Please use no more than 10 endnotes. Endnotes are to enlighten the reader, not to demonstrate the erudition of the author.
Copyright. It is a condition of publication that authors vest or license copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, as of right use the article elsewhere after publication providing prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis.
Free article access: Corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through our website (www.tandfonline.com) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Reprints of articles published in this journal can be purchased through Rightslink® when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk
