Instructions for Authors

ScholarOne Manuscripts
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

 The European Journal of Finance

Notes for Authors

1. Submission of manuscripts.

All manuscript submissions should be made using The European Journal of Finance ScholarOne Manuscripts site. Manuscripts must be written in English and must be original, unpublished work which is not simultaneously under consideration elsewhere. All manuscripts are subject to preliminary screening. Papers which meet the aims and scope of the journal will be subject to blind review normally by at least two referees.

To allow for this blinded review, authors are required to provide files that are free from author-identifying information. You will be asked to enter your contact details during the online submission process and present them in a title page that is not shared with referees.

2. Preparation of the manuscript.

The manuscript must be typed, double-spaced with a font size of 12pt. Manuscripts should be prepared in Word or LaTeX.

Clearly written, concise manuscripts should consist of:

2.1 Title. A concise and informative title. This should ideally include one or more of the keywords listed below the abstract.

2.2 Abstract. A concise and informative abstract of at most 200 words, summarizing the significant points of the paper. This should be followed by a short list of key words and an appropriate JEL classification.

2.3 Main Text. This should be arranged in sequentially numbered sections. The first section should be the Introduction. Where appropriate for the content, sub-sections are allowed and these should be titled and numbered with a second digit (2.1, 2.2 and so on).

2.4 Summary and/or conclusions. The paper should end with a short non-technical summary or set of conclusions. Where appropriate this should include an indication of on-going work, or research that is required in the area. Acknowledgement of assistance and funding should appear here.

2.5 Tables. Each table should be uploaded as a separate file. They must be consecutively numbered and should have a brief informative title. Tables should be understandable without reference to the text. Explanatory footnotes should be brief, placed beneath the table and indicated by lower case letters. When using percentages, state the absolute value that corresponds to 100%. Identify all statistical methods.

2.6 Figures. All graphs, charts and illustrations of any kind must be submitted one to a page. They must be consecutively numbered and should have a brief informative title. Figures should be understandable without reference to the text. Explanatory footnotes should be brief, placed beneath the table and indicated by lower case letters.

2.7 References. The Harvard system is used; references in the text should be cited thus: Jones (1991) or (Jones, 1991); two authors, Jones and Smith (1991) or (Jones and Smith, 1991); three or more authors, Jones et al. (1991) or (Jones et al., 1991). References to papers by the same author(s) in the same year are distinguished in text and reference list by the letters a, b etc. References should be listed at the end of the paper in alphabetical order by surname, giving paper titles and journal titles in full, and first and last page numbers. References to books, monographs and reports should include the year of publication, title, edition, editor(s), place of publication and publisher in that order.

2.8 Footnotes. The use of footnotes is discouraged. Where footnotes are used in the text they should be numbered consecutively and should appear at the end of the paper.

2.9 Use of appendices. Detailed technical material and non-essential tables and figures should be placed in appendices wherever possible.

2.10 Separate appendices. To reduce the total length of an article, appendices may be withheld from the article and designated as being available from the corresponding author on request. Such appendices should be clearly indicated in the Introduction and should accompany all submissions as a separate file.

2.11 Paper length. The length of the submitted manuscript should not normally exceed 40 pages (in 12pt font), to include, references, tables, figures and all appendices, which are not to be made available separately.

2.12 Certification of originality and citations to authors' previous work. By submitting a papers, authors are certifying (a) that the submission is original, unpublished work, (b) that in whole or material part it is not simultaneously under consideration elsewhere and that (c) their previous published work which is relevant to the submission is cited in the text and appears in the list of references

3. Equations.

All but very short mathematical expressions should be displayed on a separate line and centred. Equations should be sequentially numbered and punctuated in the usual way. Every effort should be made to use notation that is in common use. All notation and symbols must be defined in the text of the paper. Authors should follow the notational styles and conventions adopted in the Journals of The Royal Statistical Society or The American Statistical Association.

4. Development of mathematical expressions.

These should be presented in appendices with only the relevant results appearing in the text. Where results are being quoted from specialist mathematical journals or texts authors should ensure that the development is rigorous, comprehensible to the non-specialist reader and that sources are adequately cited, but should avoid unnecessary repetition of standard material.

5. Files.

The online submission system requires that the authors provide the following files:

An anonymised main document (including the abstract) and separate files for any tables, figures and separate appendices. The file(s) should be completely free of author-identifying information to allow the paper to be shared with referees. You will be asked to designate your files appropriately as ‘Table', ‘Figure', ‘Main Document – anonymous', or ‘Separate Appendices'.

6. Submission fee.

A submission fee of €100.00 is payable to the journal. Authors whose papers are sent for review will be sent details of the journal's bank after screening

7. Proofs.

Proofs will be sent to the designated corresponding author and should be returned directly to the publisher within 3 days of receipt. Alterations in proofs other than the correction of typesetter's errors may cause delay and extra charges that may be made to authors.

8. Early Electronic Offprints.

Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author's preferential rate of £15.00/$25.00 per copy.

9. Copyright.

It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from Taylor & Francis, provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as original source of publication, and that Taylor & Francis is notified so that our records show that its use is properly authorised. Authors retain a number of other rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies documents. These policies are referred to at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authorrights.pdf for full details. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
