The instructions below are specifically directed at authors who wish to submit a manuscript to Asian Affairs. For general information, please visit the Author Services section of our website.

Asian Affairs considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Asian Affairs, that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Asian Affairs incurs and their papers will not be published.

Contributions to Asian Affairs must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees at the discretion of the Editorial Office.

The Royal Society for Asian Affairs and its publisher Taylor & Francis make every effort to ensure the accuracy of all the information (the “Content”) contained in its publications. However, The Royal Society for Asian Affairs, Taylor & Francis, and its agents and licensors, make no representations or warranties whatsoever as to the accuracy, completeness, or suitability for any purpose of the Content and disclaim all such representations and warranties, whether express or implied to the maximum extent permitted by law. Any views expressed in this publication are the views of the authors and are not the views of The Royal Society for Asian Affairs or Taylor & Francis.

Submissions: The Editor welcomes submission of material for consideration as a main article or a review article. Comments on articles previously published in Asian Affairs can also be submitted. Main articles should be broadly consistent with the ‘Aims and Scope' of Asian Affairs, and generally be approximately 5000–7000 words in length. They should include a bibliographical note on the author of no more than 50 words. Review articles should be in the range of 1500–2000 words and book reviews 650–700 words for single titles or 1000 words for two titles. Illustrations: Maps and figures should be clear and large enough to be suitable for reproduction and the lettering should be large enough to allow (if necessary) reduction in size for printing. All maps, diagrams and other drawings should be referred to as figures, and should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals in the order in which they are referred to in the text. Captions to figures, giving the appropriate figure number, should be typed on a separate page at the end of the article. Photographs should be submitted with captions and their position in the text should be marked as Plate 1, 2, 3, etc. in brackets. Permission to reproduce copyright material must be obtained by the author prior to submission and any acknowledgements should be included either in the text or the caption as appropriate.

Reproduction of copyright material

As an author, you are required to secure permission to reproduce any proprietary text, illustration, table, or other material, including data, audio, video, film stills, and screenshots, and any supplementary material you propose to submit. This applies to direct reproduction as well as “derivative reproduction” (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). The reproduction of short extracts of text, excluding poetry and song lyrics, for the purposes of criticism may be possible without formal permission on the basis that the quotation is reproduced accurately and full attribution is given.
