Instructions for Authors

This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.
- The journal will only accept papers submitted in English. British spelling is preferred.
- Manuscripts should meet high academic standards. Contributors need to remember that they are writing for an international audience. National colloquialisms and idiomatic use of language should be avoided and gender neutral language used.
- It is advisory for non-English speakers to have a native English speaker read the article before submission.
- Arbitrary rules of general style, punctuation, and language are not strictly imposed, but the general guidance set out in The Oxford Guide to Style and The Oxford Style Manual is preferred. Above all, authors should ensure clarity and consistency and avoid ambiguity.
- References must use the author-date form (APA style), and should include page numbers where appropriate (e.g., for quotations). Do not use footnotes for references.
- Clear presentation of data, tables and figures requires particular attention. Good guidance is given in the APA Publication Manual.
- Use British musical terminology (e.g., "bar" instead of "measure") but use American terminology for note lengths or give American equivalents when first using the British terms (e.g., "crotchet (quarter note)").
- When referring to pitches (but not when referring to keys), use Unicode symbols 266D-F rather than the words "flat", "natural" and "sharp".
- Use digits to refer to octaves (ranging from C to B), using 0 for the lowest audible octave. Thus middle C is C4 and A4 is (normally) equivalent to 440 Hz. Do not set the digit as a subscript.
- When using scientific terminology and specialised musical terminology, remember that you are writing for an interdisciplinary readership, and so terms and abbreviations are more likely to require explanation.
- The title page should contain the following elements: title; in the case of a long title an abbreviated running title of no more than 40 characters (including spaces); the authors' names and affiliations; an abstract of 100 words briefly summarizing the essential contents; the full address of the corresponding author: telephone and fax numbers, postal address, and e-mail address.
- Divide your material into logical sections using numbered headings and (where appropriate) numbered subheadings.
- Use footnotes sparingly and keep them short. Do not use endnotes.
- Acknowledgements should be included at the end of the text and before the references.
- Ensure good margins and line spacing. Do not worry about making your submission look beautiful. That is the job of the typesetter; your job is to ensure clarity.
- Ensure that illustrations, examples, figures and tables are clearly numbered, and refer to them in the text in the form "Figure 1", etc. Do not use illustrations, examples, figures or tables which are not referred to in the text.
- Provide each illustration, example, figure and table with a short descriptive legend in the form "Figure 1. [description]".
- If colour printing is required, authors must request this at time of submission and will be charged as follows: £250 per figure for four figures or less; any subsequent figures will be £50 per figure. An estimate of colour printing charges can be obtained on request when a manuscript is submitted. Colour illustrations can be included in the on-line version at no cost to the authors.
- Authors can submit audio files and other media to be linked to the on-line version of their article on publication.
- If your article is accepted for publication, you will be asked to separate the text from the figures and tables, indicating the approximate position of each figure and table in the text with an instruction such as ‘[Place Figure 1 about here]'. Figure and table captions should be supplied together on separate pages.
- Do not include captions in figures. You will be asked to send the original graphic files of figures, preferably in EPS or TIF format with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. Freehand or typwritten lettering is not acceptable.
- Manuscripts should be submitted online at the Journal of New Music Research ScholarOne site (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/nnmr). New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Center.
- Submit your article as a PDF file formatted for A4-sized paper with all figures, tables, references and notes included, so that it may easily be read by reviewers.
- If your article is accepted for publication, you will be asked to send the original word-processing file (of whichever type you have used) and the original graphic files of figures. Articles for publication cannot be accepted in PDF, Postscript, ASCII or Works.
- Identify the types of files in their names with Windows-style extensions (e.g. ".docx").
- Make sure that you submit the correct version of your article and keep a back-up copy for yourself.
