Instructions for Authors

Scope of Manuscripts Considered: TCQ publishes article-length reports of research studies. In addition, TCQ routinely publishes other types of submissions: pedagogical approaches, positions, and book reviews.

Pedagogical Approaches are descriptions of classroom experiences and practices. These pieces are designed to provide a forum for a given instructor's teaching practices and suggestions to others, but without the structure of a formal, methodology-driven study. These submissions should be no longer than 8,000 words and should include suggestions about how other instructors might use the author's experiences to inform their own teaching practices.

Positions are argumentative essays about some aspect of the field of technical communication. They may, for example, call attention to an under-examined issue in our current theories about technical communication; they may argue for the need for more extensive research about a given topic; or they may use ideas from other disciplines to lead us to rethink how we conceptualize practice and pedagogy in technical communication. These submissions should be no longer than 8,000 words.

Book Reviews offer critical insight into a recent publication of interest to teachers and/or researchers in technical communication. Reviews should offer readers more than a summary of a publication's contents. They should situate the publication under consideration within relevant conversations about the theory and practice of technical communication in its many contexts. Book reviews of single texts are typically no longer than 1,500 words. Reviews of multiple books may be longer.

Submission of Manuscripts:

Manuscripts must be submitted through the journal's Scholar One website, http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tcq. Questions for the editor regarding actual submissions may be addressed to: Mark Zachry, at zachry@u.washington.edu. Questions regarding book reviews can be sent to: Tracy Bridgeford <tbridgeford@mail.unomaha.edu> University of Nebraska at Omaha, 6001 Dodge Street, ASH 189N, Omaha, NE 68182.

Technical Communication Quarterly uses an online submission and review system, ScholarOne, through which authors submit manuscripts and track their progress up until a publication decision has been made. Authors will enter pertinent information into the system and submit the following files: (a) cover letter file (see description below); (b) manuscript file (Word or WordPerfect format [PC compatible]) containing the entire text of the article, including title page, abstract, all text, references, and appendixes; (c) figures and tables, which should be submitted as separate files (one table or figure per file). Please log on to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tcq for information and instructions regarding registration and manuscript submission.

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 100 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text in the abstract. Because an anonymous review system is employed, authors' names and affiliations should not appear on the title page or elsewhere in the manuscript file (they can be keyed into the system and placed on a separate page in the cover letter file). The cover letter must contain the title of the manuscript, author's name, place of affiliation, mailing address, phone number, and a 35-word biographical sketch.

Cite in the text by author and date (Smith, 1983). Prepare reference list in accordance with the APA Publication Manual, 5th ed. Examples:

Illustrations:

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

  • 300 dpi or higher
  • Sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.

Tables and Figures:

Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.

Proofs and Reprints:

Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis' Central Article Tracking System (CATS). The corresponding author of each article will receive three complimentary copies of the issue in which the article appears. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication.
