Editorial Scope

Research in human development is moving away from an isolated emphasis on particular stages ranging from infancy to later adulthood and from a reduction of multiple levels of organization to variables or processes associated with one discipline. Accordingly, Research in Human Development (RHD) seeks to promote a shift away from research focused on development at particular stages (early childhood, adolescence, middle age, older adulthood) and from separate fields of inquiry to a more inclusive, integrative, and interdisciplinary approach to the study of human development across the entire life span. The integration of the person and his or her context across life will be the focus of the scholarship promoted by this journal; as such, multilevel, multivariate, and integrative longitudinal study of person-context relations will be emphasized in these publications. Specifically, an interdisciplinary focus that integratively incorporates biological, psychological, sociological, anthropological, economic, and historical perspectives will be stressed in the pages of RHD. To encompass such breadth, the publication will incorporate a variety of research methods, from quantitative to qualitative. Moreover, the journal seeks to promote scholarship on the social, cultural, and national (global) contexts of human development across diverse ethnic and racial groups employing multiple methods. Finally, RHD seeks to promote scholarship that informs and changes public policies and social programs that promote positive and healthy human development for all people. In short, by providing a forum for research that is life-span oriented, interdisciplinary, contextual, and methodologically diverse, the journal will significantly advance the field of human development.

Audience

The audience consists of researchers, educators, policymakers, and practitioners in all fields interested in human development.

Manuscript Submission

Research in Human Development (RHD) publishes thematic issues devoted to the integration of theory and research representing multiple disciplines and methodologies and life-span perspective. Individual, unsolicited manuscripts are not considered. Please submit two hard copies and a disk (in Microsoft Word) of proposals for thematic issues to the Editor-in-Chief: Erin Phelps, c/o The Society for the Study of Human Development, Tufts University, Lincoln-Filene Center, Medford, MA 02155. E-mail: lauren.sweeney@tufts.edu. Such proposals (no more than two pages) should include a summary of the need for an issue on the particular theme; how the collected papers meet our interdisciplinary, multimethod, and life-span goals; qualifications of the proposers to edit such an issue; and a list of potential authors of three to four articles. These proposals will be reviewed by the editorial board. Once a proposal has been reviewed and accepted, the manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher. All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten and double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 100 words. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text in the abstract.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines: 300 dpi or higher; sized to fit on journal page; EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only; submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files. Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, and on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.

Proofs and Reprints

Page proofs are sent to the designated author using Taylor & Francis' Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication.
