Instructions for Authors

Content: The Journal of the Learning Sciences provides a multidisciplinary forum for the presentation and discussion of research on education and learning. Emphasis is placed on important ideas that can change our understanding of learning as well as the practice of education. Articles typically draw on such diverse fields as cognitive science, educational psychology, cognitive psychology, anthropology, educational and socio-cultural studies and are based on rigorous analyses that present new insights on how people learn. In all cases, however, the fundamental focus is on understanding the processes, tools, and contexts, as well as outcomes, of learning in its myriad forms inside and outside of schools.

Manuscript Submission:
The Journal of the Learning Sciences receives all manuscript submissions electronically via their ScholarOne Manuscripts website located at: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/JLS. ScholarOne Manuscripts allows for rapid submission of original and revised manuscripts, as well as facilitating the review process and internal communication between authors, editors and reviewers via a web-based platform. ScholarOne Manuscripts technical support can be accessed via http://scholarone.com/services/support/.

If you have any other requests please contact the journal's editor at journalofthelearningsciences@gmail.com.

Authors will enter pertinent information into the system and submit the following files: (a) Cover letter file, containing any comments to the editor as well as statements indicating that the findings reported have not been previously published and that the manuscript is not being simultaneously submitted elsewhere and that the authors have complied with APA ethical standards. (b) Manuscript file, containing entire text of the article, including title page abstract, all text, references, footnotes, and appendices. (c) Figures and tables, which may be submitted as separate files if desired. The following formats are acceptable: Word and WordPerfect for text; tif, jpeg, gif, bmp, cdr for art.

Authors should keep a copy of their manuscript file to guard against loss. Prepare manuscripts according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). A synopsis of the conventions in this manual is available by writing to the American Psychological Society Observer. Any manuscript not in this style will automatically be returned to the author. Type all components of the manuscript double-spaced, including title page, abstract, text, quotes, acknowledgments, references, appendixes, tables, figure captions, and footnotes. The title page of the manuscript should include the title of the manuscript, authors' names, affiliations, and complete addresses, including the telephone number and e-mail of the author to whom editorial correspondence is to be addressed. The second page should consist of a 100- to 200-word abstract. References, like the rest of the manuscript, should be double-spaced and in the form determined by the APA. Tables and figures should also conform to APA guidelines. References to all tables and figures should be explicit in text.

Style: Avoid or define technical words specific to a particular discipline. Avoid acronyms and terminology not consistent with style guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.).

Illustrations: Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
  • 300 dpi or higher
  • sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Color Reproduction: Color art will be reproduced in color in the online publication at no additional cost to the author. Color illustrations will also be considered for print publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Please note that color reprints can only be ordered if print reproduction costs are paid. Print Rates: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print.
Review: All submissions are reviewed by peers with expertise in the area represented by the manuscript. Articles and reviews must be judged to be of substantial importance to the broad, multidisciplinary readership of The Journal of the Learning Sciences as well as meet a high level of scientific responsibility.

Regulations and Permissions: Manuscripts are typically around 15,000 words. Authors should consult with editors to determine if longer manuscripts are appropriate. Only original manuscripts written in English are considered. In a cover letter, authors should state that they have complied with American Psychological Association ethical standards in the treatment of their samples. (A statement of Editorial Policy appeared in Volume 1, Number 1.) Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. As an author, you are required to secure permission if youwant to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as “derivative reproduction” (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

Production Notes: After a manuscript is accepted for publication, authors are asked to submit a final version of the manuscript. Files are copyedited, typeset into page proofs, and e-mailed to authors. Authors are responsible for reading proofs, correcting errors, and answering the editor's queries.

Reprints: Reprints of an individual article may be ordered from Rightslink. A link to the ordering form is included at the proofs stage. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication.

Complimentary Policy: Each corresponding author of an article will receive up to three complete copies of the issue in which his/her article appears as well as a PDF file of the article via email. This file is for personal use only and may not be copied or disseminated in any form without prior written permission from Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
