Instructions for Authors

CONTRIBUTOR INFORMATION

Language Learning and Development welcomes papers that take diverse approaches to the problem of language learning and development (including biological, cognitive, linguistic, social, and cross-cultural perpectives) and that employ whatever methods work to answer the question (e.g., experimental, observational, computational, ethnographic, comparative, neuroscience, or formal methods of investigation). Authors are encouraged to frame the facts they present in such a way that their significance for the language learning problem is clear, not only to those in the particular area, but to all readers. Papers will also need to articulate the assumptions on which they rest. To foster interdisciplinary exchange, we also welcome short commentaries on papers that appear in the journal to be published at the discretion of the editors.

Submitted manuscripts should be double-spaced including title page, text, tables, figures, references, notes, and appendixes, and must adhere to the guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). The first page should include the title, name(s) and affiliation(s) of author(s), and full contact addresses for correspondence (including e-mail). The second page should include an abstract of not more than 150 words. The text of the manuscript should begin on the third page, without repeating the title. Use either American or British spelling consistently within an article. Two types of manuscripts can be submitted: Brief articles of not more than 3,000 words (including references, notes, and tables) are expected to present new research findings and will be favored if they present innovations in approach or method. Regular manuscripts should normally be no more than 25 to 30 double-spaced pages (including references, notes, and tables). For both types of manuscripts, minimize the number of notes. Tables and figures should be placed after the references, each on a separate page with an indication as to where in the text they occur.

Submissions should be e-mailed to lld@uchicago.edu. Include in the e-mail the title of the paper, the authors, and the abstract. The preferred form of submission of the manuscript is a PDF file including all tables and figures, with special fonts (e.g., IPA) embedded. It is also possible to submit the manuscript and tables as a Word .doc or .rtf file, with figures in a separate file (see illustrations information below). After acceptance, a final version of the article will be required on diskette/CD as well as in hard copy.

Permissions:

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

Production Notes:

Accepted manuscripts are copyedited and typeset into page proofs. Authors read proofs to correct errors and answer editor's queries. Authors may order reprints of their articles only when they return page proofs.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines: 300 dpi or higher; sized to fit on journal page; EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only; submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files.

Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first page with color is $900.00. The next three pages with color are $450.00 each. A custom quote will be provided for color art totaling more than 4 journal pages. Good-quality color prints should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.
