Instructions for Authors

Submission of Manuscripts

Send the original typewritten manuscript and three copies, three sets of illustrations, and a cover letter to: Wendy Martin, Claremont Graduate University, Department of English, Blaisdell House, 143 East 10th Street, Claremont, CA 91711. Book Reviews should also be submitted to the above address. Authors are strongly encouraged to submit manuscripts on disk. The disk should be prepared using MS Word or WordPerfect and should be clearly labeled with the authors' names, file name, and software program. Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

Preparation of Manuscripts

All manuscripts should be typewritten, double-spaced, one-sided, and a maximum length of 25 pages. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title for a running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces, an abstract of approximately 100 words, the author(s) affiliation and location. Each submitted article must contain author(s) mailing address, telephone number, e-mail (if available), and a stamped self-addressed envelope.

Footnotes. Footnotes appear as “Notes'' at the end of the article preceding the References. Authors are advised to include footnote material in the text whenever possible. Notes are to be numbered consecutively throughout the paper and typed double-spaced at the end of the text (they will not be set as footnotes).

References. Literature referenced should be indicated in the text by consecutive superior arabic numbers. Prepare the reference list in accordance with The MLA International Bibliography. Listed references should be complete in all details including, in quotes, article titles in journals. Journal abbreviations should conform to The MLA International Bibliography. Examples:

Journal article:
Jacobs, Fredrika. ``Woman's Capacity to Create: The Unusual Case of Sofonisba Anguissola.'' Renaissance Quarterly 47 (1994), pp. 74-101.

Book:
Huffaker, Robert. John Fowles. Boston: Twayne, 1980.

Article in Book:
Cixous, Helene. ``The Laugh of the Medusa.'' In: New French Feminisms: 245-64. Eds. Elaine Marks and Isabelle de Courtivron. Brighton: Harvester, 1980.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. Number tables consecutively with roman numer-als; a short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Illustrations and photo-graphs should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Cap-tions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. Photographs, if submitted, must be good glossy original prints.

Proofs

Page proofs are sent to the designated author. They must be checked carefully and returned within 48 hours of receipt.

REPRINTS

Reprints of an individual article may be ordered from Taylor & Francis by using the order form included with page proofs. A complimentary copy of the issue will be mailed to each author (up to three for multiple authors).
