An International Journal of Documentation
Instructions for Authors
Manuscripts
Manuscripts submitted for consideration will be subject to the normal process of peer review. Please send one copy of your manuscript formatted as double-spaced text with standard margins (3 cm), printed on one side of good quality paper, along with an electronic version on disk (see below for additional instructions) to Christine L. Sundt, Visual Resources Consultant & Educator, P.O. Box 5316 (or 20 West 31st Avenue), Eugene, OR 97405 - U.S.A. (email: csundt@mindspring.com).
All contributors will be asked to submit a brief bio that will appear on the “Contributors” pages in the issue where the article or review is published. Contributors are encouraged to remember that most occupations and activities are shared by both sexes and should reflect this situation in their writing by avoiding the exclusive use of the masculine gender pronoun when members of both sexes may be involved. Submission of a paper to this Journal will be taken to imply that it is not being considered elsewhere for publication and that if accepted for publication, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in any language, without the consent of the editor or publisher.
Articles
The title of the article and the author(s) names(s) should appear at the beginning of the paper on a separate page. All pages of the manuscript, except the title page, must be numbered. All manuscripts should include full correspondence details (street address, telephone, fax, and email addresses) of the corresponding author on the title page. Each paper requires an abstract of 100-150 words summarizing the significant coverage and findings of the article. Each abstract should be accompanied by up to six keywords, which among them should characterize the paper.
Reviews
Reviews of books, exhibitions or other material should be from 2000 to 3,000 words unless otherwise specified. The review heading should include title, author, place of publication, publisher, date, number of pages and illustrations, ISBN number, and price. Citations to the book being reviewed may be indicated by page numbers in parentheses in the text of the review.
Tables and Illustrations
Tables and illustrations must be kept separate from (not embedded in) the text. Tables should be numbered consecutively by Roman numerals and figures (illustrations) by Arabic numerals. Both tables and illustrations should be presented as "camera-ready copy," have descriptive captions, and be mentioned in sequential order in the text with their approximate positions clearly specified within the text. Please supply clear copies of illustrative artwork in a format suitable for publication. Illustrations may be sent electronically, preferably in either TIFF (tagged image format) or EPS (encapsulated Postscript) formats but we can also accept PICT or JPEG formats. There is a preference for good original prints and photographs rather than slides and transparencies, although the latter can be accepted. The publisher will normally reproduce colour figures in black and white unless colour is deemed necessary. The author(s) must arrange permission to reproduce illustrations and any other material that has been previously published.
A list of captions relating to the tables or illustrations, with relevant numbers (e. g., Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.), should be set out on a separate page attached to the manuscript. The permission statement provided by the copyright holder should be included at the end of each caption. Permission agreements should be sent along with the manuscript.
Formats, Reference & Notes
Consult the current edition of the Chicago Manual of Style for information on spelling conventions, punctuation, notes, references, and bibliography formats. References and other notes should be indicated in the text by consecutive superior Arabic numbers. Text notes are printed as endnotes at the end of the paper under the caption “NOTES.” As Visual Resources is edited in the United States, U.S. spelling and punctuation conventions are preferred.
Disk Submissions
In sending an electronic copy of the text, please save the file as Microsoft Word for PC in the latest version available, adding “.doc” as the file name extension if it is not automatically applied. If MS-Word is not available to you, please specify which program you have used to enable translation. Do not send your file as text only or as a locked (read only) file. Whenever sending an electronic file, be sure to send a hard copy version to enable verification that both the paper and electronic versions are the same. Electronic files, including image files, should be sent to Christine L. Sundt at csundt@mindspring.com or on disk (CD or DVD) to the address above.
Proofs
Proofs will be made available to authors via our online proofing system. A username and password will be sent to the author nominated for correspondence once the proof is available for viewing. Corrections should be returned to the publisher within 48 hours of receipt.
Free article access
Corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through our website (www.informaworld.com) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Reprints of articles published in this journal can be purchased through Rightslink® when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk
Copyright
It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found at www.informaworld.com/authors_journals_copyright_position. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
