Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be submitted to Carole M. Counihan, Department of Sociology & Anthropology, Millersville University, Millersville, PA 17551-0302, USA (E-mail: carole.counihan@millersville.edu) or Allen J. Grieco, The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, Via di Vincigliata, 26, 50135 Florence, Italy (E-mail: agrieco@itatti.it). Authors are strongly encouraged to submit an electronic version of their manuscript as an e-mail attachment. The article should be prepared using MS Word or WordPerfect and the message of the email should contain the author's name, the file name, and the software program used. A hardcopy printout that exactly matches the electronic file must be supplied.

Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher. All parts of the manuscript should be typewritten, double-spaced, with margins of at least one inch on all sides, and be a maximum of thirty pages in length. Number manuscript pages consecutively throughout the paper. Authors should also supply a shortened version of the title suitable for the running head, not exceeding 50 character spaces. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 150 words. Avoid abbrevia-tions, diagrams, and reference to the text. Further instructions and an author template can be obtained from the journal's web page at www.taylorandfrancis.com.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:

  • 300 dpi or higher
  • sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first figure is $1,200. Subsequent figures, totaling no more than 4 text pages, are $500.00 each. Good- quality color prints should be provided, in their final size. Figures needing reduction or enlargement will be charged an additional 25 percent. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of any artwork deemed unacceptable.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author's name, and top edge indicated.

References and Notes

Two systems can be used—the Social Science or Historical and Literary form; either one is acceptable, but an author must use one system consistently throughout the article. All references and notes must conform to MLA style. Please consult the journal website at www.taylorandfrancis.com for examples.

Proofs and Reprints

Each corresponding author will receive one copy of the issue in which the article appears. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication.

Aims and Scope

Food and Foodways is a refereed, interdisciplinary, and international journal devoted to publishing original scholarly articles on the history and culture of human nourishment. By reflecting on the role food plays in human relations, this unique journal explores the powerful but often subtle ways in which food has shaped, and shapes, our lives socially, economically, politically, mentally, nutritionally, and morally. Because food is a pervasive social phenomenon, it cannot be approached by any one discipline. We encourage articles that engage dialogue, debate, and exchange across disciplines. Food and Foodways publishes work by anthro-pologists, biologists, economists, ethnobotanists, historians, literary critics, nutritionists, psychologists, sociologists, and others who use food as a lens of analysis. We also seek review essays or short topical pieces that are provocative and problematic in nature.
