Instructions for Authors

INTRODUCTION

Submission of a paper to Economics of Innovation and New Technology will be taken to imply that it represents original work not previously published, that it is not being considered elsewhere for publication, and that if accepted for publication it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in any language, without the consent of editor and publisher. It is a condition of the acceptance by the editor of a typescript for publication that the publisher automatically acquires the copyright of the typescript throughout the world.

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Four copies of each manuscript should be submitted to the managing editor:

Cristiano Antonelli

Economics of Innovation and New Technology

Editorial Offices

Fondazione Giovanni Agnelli

Via Giacosa 38

10125

Torino, Italy

It is very helpful if authors are also able to submit the paper on 5 1/4" or 3 1/2" diskette (IBM PC-DOS or Microsoft MS-DOS). It is not necessary to send this diskette when first submitting a manuscript, but authors are asked to indicate the wordprocessing software in which they could submit their paper. When a final version of the paper is accepted, the authors will be asked to submit that final version on diskette.

FORMAT OF MANUSCRIPTS

Manuscripts should be typed in double spacing with wide margins (3 cm) on one side of standard A4 paper.

Title Page: This should contain the title of the paper, a short running title, the name and full postal address of each author and an indication of which author will be responsible for correspondence, reprints and proofs. Abbreviations in the title should be avoided.

Abstract: This should not exceed 150 words and should be presented on a separate sheet, summarizing the significant coverage findings.

Key Words: Abstracts should be accompanied by up to six key words or phrases that between them characterize the contents of the paper. These will be used for indexing and data retrieval purposes.

J.E.L. Classification: Please list the appropriate Journal of Economic Literature classification(s) for your paper.

FIGURES

All figures should be numbered with consecutive Arabic numerals, have descriptive captions and be mentioned in the text. Figures should be kept separate from the text but an approximate position for each should be indicated in the margin. It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission for any reproduction from other sources.

Preparation: Figures must be of a high enough standard for direct reproduction. They should be prepared in black (India) ink on white card or tracing paper, with all the lettering and symbols included. Photographs intended for halftone reproduction must be high quality glossy originals of maximum contrast. Redrawing or retouching of unsuitable figures will be charged to authors.

Size: Figures should be planned so that they reduce to a 10.5 cm column width. The preferred width of submitted drawings is 1621 cm, with capital letting 4 mm high, for reduction by one-half. Photographs for halftone reproduction should be approximately twice the desired size.

Captions: A list of figure captions should be typed on a separate sheet and included in the typescript.

TABLES

Tables should be clearly typed with double spacing. Number tables with consecutive arabic numerals and give each a clear descriptive heading. Avoid the use of vertical rules to separate columns. Table footnotes should be typed below the table, designated by superior lower-case letters.

EQUATIONS AND FORMULAE

Wherever possible, mathematical equations should be typewritten, with subscripts and superscripts clearly shown. It is helpful to identify Greek letters and unusual or ambiguous symbols in the margin when they first occur. To Simplify typesetting, please use: (I ) the "exp" form of complex exponential functions; (2) fractional exponents instead of root signs; and (3) the solidus (/) to simplify fractions--e.g. exp x1/2.

Equations should be centred and numbered on the right-hand side using consecutive arabic numerals in parentheses. References to equations in the text should use the form "Equation (5)" or simply "(5)".

Marking: The printer will set mathematical symbols in italics, except for obvious groups such as "sin" and "log". Any symbols that are to be left in roman (upright) type should be encircled in pencil in the typescript; bold symbols should be underlined with a wavy line.
