Instructions for Authors

NOTES FOR CONTRIBUTORS

German Politics is a refereed journal. Articles submitted to German Politics should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time. If another version of the article is under consideration by another publication, or has been, or will be published elsewhere, authors should clearly indicate this at the time of submission.

German Politics only accepts electronic submission. All submissions should be made online at the German Politics Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review”.

The article must include an abstract of up to 150 words. The author's name, full address and other contact information should be included on a separate cover page, together with any acknowledgements and a note of the exact length of the article.

It is the author's responsibility to ensure that where copyright materials are included within an article the permission of the copyright holder has been obtained. Confirmation of this should be included.

Style

Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts conform to the journal style. The Editors will not undertake retyping of manuscripts before publication. Further guidance is obtainable from the publisher.

Authors whose first language is not English should have their article read and corrected by a native English speaker. Short sentences, short paragraphs, simple, clear phraseology and direct tenses are distinct virtues. Foreign words should be italic, but not frequently used words such as Land, Länder, proper nouns, or titles, such as Bundestag.

Quotations should be in single quotation marks, double within single. Long quotations of five or more lines should be indented without quotes. Capitals should be used sparingly, principally for proper titles and where they may be necessary to avoid ambiguity. British spelling should be used throughout (‘s' not ‘z' in organise, etc.). Common foreign words such as regime, role, elite to be unaccented. No full stop after abbreviations (e.g. Dr, MP, NGO), and no apostrophe in plurals such as Mps, the 1930s. % to be written per cent. Dates should be given in the form 31 March 1989; 1944–45. Aug. to Feb. abbreviated in notes. Sub-headings should be in capitals, ranged left; sub-sub-headings in lower-case italic, ranged left. They should not be numbered.

Notes should be kept to a minimum and numbered consecutively throughout the article with a raised numeral corresponding to the list of notes to be placed at the end. Harvard-style and bibliographical references are unacceptable.

(a) Books: Italicise all titles of books. Give author, title, place of publication, year and page reference, e.g., Peter Katzenstein, Policy and Politics in West Germany (Philadelphia, PA: Temple Press, 1987), pp.115D16. Additional references to the same book should take the form: Katzenstein, Policy and Politics, p.22.

(b) Articles: Place titles of articles within single inverted comas. Italicise the title of the book or journal in which the article appears. Cite journal volume, number and date of publication, and page reference, e.g. K. Kaiser, ‘Germany's Unification', Foreign Affairs 70/1 (1992), p.204. Subsequent references should take the form Kaiser, ‘Germany's Unification'.

Book Reviews: title (italic), author(s) or editor(s), place of publication, publisher, date of publication, no. of pages, price.
