Instructions for Authors

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

Articles submitted to Defence Studies should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time. If another version of the article is under consideration by another publication, or has been, or will be published elsewhere, authors should clearly indicate this at the time of submission.

Each typescript should be submitted in duplicate. Articles, viewpoints, comments & reports should be typewritten on A4/Letter paper, on one side only, double-spaced (including the notes) and with ample margins. All pages (including those containing only diagrams and tables) should be numbered consecutively.

There is no standard length for articles, but 7,000-10,000 (including notes and references) is a useful target. The article should have a separate summary of up to 100 words, which should describe the main arguments and conclusions of the article. Viewpoint opinion pieces have 500-2,000 words (no endnotes). Comments & reports are 2,000-4,000 words (including endnotes). Book reviews are 500-750 words.

Details of the author's institutional affiliation, full address and other contact information should be included on a separate cover sheet. Any acknowledgements should be included on the cover sheet as should a note of the exact word length of the article.

All maps, diagrams, charts and graphs should be referred to as figures and consecutively numbered. Tables should be kept to a minimum and contain only essential data. Each figure and table must be given an Arabic numeral, followed by a heading, and be referred to in the text.

Following acceptance for publication, articles should be submitted on high-density 3 1/2 inch virus-free disks (IBM PC or Macintosh compatible) in Word for Windows together with a hard copy to facilitate typesetting, notes should be grouped together at the end of the file. Tables should also be placed at the end of the file and be prepared using tabs. Any diagrams or maps should be copied to a separate disk separately in uncompressed TIF or JPG formats in individual files. These should be prepared in black and white. Tints should be avoided, use open patterns instead. If maps and diagrams cannot be prepared electronically, they should be presented on good quality white paper.

Each disk should be labelled with the journal's name, article title, author's name and software used. It is the author's responsibility to ensure that where copyright materials are included within an article the permission of the copyright holder has been obtained. Confirmation of this should be included on a separate sheet included with the disk.

STYLE
Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts conform to the journal style. The Editors will not undertake retyping of manuscripts before publication. A guide to style and presentation is obtainable from the editors, or from the publisher. Journals Editorial, Routledge, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 4 Park Square, Milton Park, Oxfordshire OX14 4RN, UK. Email authorqueries@tandf.co.uk or visit www.informaworld.com/authors.

Dates in the form 1 January 2000. Use figures for 11 and above. US spelling is retained in American contributions. Authors should provide current unit or institutional affiliation to go in a biographical footnote. Subheadings (bold upper and lower case) and sub-sub headings (italics) should be unambiguously marked on the copy. Acronyms and abbreviations should always be spelt out in full at first use and not be used excessively. Weapon systems are not to be italicised, only ship names should be in italics. The 24-hour clock is used for times e.g. 0800. Use per cent rather than % except in figures. Keep capitalization to a minimum, e.g. Ministry of Defence, Navy, Army and Air Force (in sense of whole service only), otherwise navy bases, etc. Short paragraphs and short sentences are highly desirable.

NOTES
Notes should be double spaced and numbered consecutively through the article with a raised numeral in the text corresponding to the list of notes placed at the end. Please do not use footnotes or Harvard Style or bibliographical references. The first line of a note must align with subsequent lines. Each note number should be standard size and have a full point.

  • References to books should give the author's name: title of the book (italics); and the place, publisher and date of publication in brackets.

e.g. 1. Nikolai Sokov. Russian Strategic Modernization (Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield 2000) Ch.2, pp.14-18.

Repeated references to the same book provided that there are no references to other works by the same author, may, after the first reference, be indicated by the author's surname and the page numbers. E.g. Sokov (note 1) p.27. A reference to a single source in the previous quote can be replaced by ibid.

  • References to articles in periodicals should give the author's initials and surname, the title of the article in single quotation marks, title of periodical (italics), the number of the volume/issue in Arabic numerals, the date of publication in brackets, and the page numbers:

e.g. Rear Admiral Sir Iain Henderson, ‘My Job: Joint Harrier Force Commander', RUSI Journal 145/3 (June 2000) pp.21-7.
