Open Learning publishes three kinds of articles:
- theoretical and evidence-based scholarly articles reflecting developments in open, distance and flexible education and training
- shorter case studies describing the implementation of forms open, flexible and distance learning systems likely to interest our international readership
- book reviews

Tables and captions to illustrations
Tables and captions to illustrations must be typed out on separate sheets and not included as part of the text.
Figures
Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction.
References
References should be indicated in the typescript by giving the author's name, with the year of publication in parentheses. If several papers by the same author and from the same year are cited, a, b, c, etc. should be put after the year of publication. The references should be listed in full, including pages, at the end of the paper, and use the following style for references:
For books:
Drucker, P. (1954) The practice of management (New York, Harper & Row).
For articles:
Bayliss, H. (1995) Postgraduate distance learning in British dual mode universities, Open Learning, 10(1), pp. 46-51.
For chapters within books:
Rumble, G. (1994) Mixed modes of teaching and learning: structures, resources and developments, in: M. Thorpe & D. Grugeon (Eds) Open Learning in the Mainstream (Harlow, Longman Group). 35-47.
We strongly encourage you to send the final, revised version of your article, electronically, by email. More help and guidelines on submitting articles already accepted for publication. Please note that this information applies only to authors whose articles have been reviewed, revised, and accepted for publication.
Proofs will be sent to authors if there is sufficient time to do so. They should be corrected and returned to the Editor within three days of receipt. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.
Free article access. Corresponding authors can receive 50 free reprints, free online access to their article through our website (www.informaworld.com) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Complimentary reprints are available through Rightslink® and additional reprints can be ordered through Rightslink® when proofs are received.
