The Journal of Nationalism and Ethnicity
Instructions for Authors
Book Reviews and Review Essays
Nationalities Papers publishes regular book reviews (800-1,000 words), longer review essays on particular themes or topics (2,000-6,000 words) and book symposiums with scholarly debates on important recent books.
Book Reviews. If you are interested in writing book reviews for the journal, contact the book review editor Zsuzsa Csergo at csergo [at] queensu.ca to be included in the book reviewer database.
Review Essays. If you would like to propose a scholarly review essay to the journal, contact the Book Review Editor to discuss your ideas and request guidelines for submission. Review essays engage the central theme of a set of significant books with the goal of providing our interdisciplinary and international readership an original argument about key questions and emerging trends in nationalism and ethnicity research. Although we often commission review essays, we also invite unsolicited proposals. Review essays between 2,000-3,000 words are accepted on the decision of two members of the Editorial Board. Longer review essays, averaging about 6,000 words, go through a standard refereeing process.
Article Submissions
Inquiries. Direct all inquiries regarding articles and special symposia to the Editor: f.bieber [at] kent.ac.uk .
Manuscripts. Articles submitted to Nationalities Papers should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time. Articles should be between 8,000 and 10,000 words in length (including notes and bibliography). Authors should be prepared to submit an abstract of up to 200 words, which should describe the main arguments and conclusions of the article. Any acknowledgements should be included in the cover letter.
Electronic Submission. All submissions should be made online at the Nationalities Papers Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.
Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review”.
Table and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate pages and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate page. Tables and Figures should be numbered consecutively by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to any symbols used.
Figures. We welcome figures sent electronically, but care and attention to these guidelines are essential as importing graphics packages can often be problematic.
- Figures must be saved individually and separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.
- Avoid the use of colour and tints for purely aesthetic reasons.
- Figures should be produced as near to the finished size as possible.
- All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
- Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
- The filename for the graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.
- Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).
Please note that it is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please do not hesitate to contact our Production Department if you have any queries.
