Instructions for Authors

NATIONALITIES PAPERS is the only journal in the world which deals exclusively with all nationalities of the former USSR, and also with national minorities in Eastern and Central European countries. The problems and importance of over 140 million people are treated with the disciplinary and methodological contexts of Post-Soviet and Europe-Asia studies. Of central concern is the fate of the Balts, Ukranians, Jews and the peoples of Central Asia and the Caucasus. Nationalities Papers is an international and multidisciplinary journal with contributors and readers throughout North America, Western and Eastern Europe, the Far East, Japan and the People's Republic of China. Included in each general issue are in-depth analyses from the historical view, updates on latest developments, some original documents, and book reviews; some issues concentrate on a region or nationality as a special topic, which exclusive focus allows for more extensive and detailed information.

Manuscripts. Articles submitted to Nationalities Papers should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time. There is no standard length for articles but 10,000 words (including notes and references) is a useful target. Authors should be prepared to submit an abstract of up to 200 words, which should describe the main arguments and conclusions of the article. Any acknowledgements should be included in the cover letter.

Electronic Submission. All submissions should be made online at the Nationalities Papers Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review”.

Table and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate pages and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate page. Tables and Figures should be numbered consecutively by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to any symbols used.

Figures. We welcome figures sent electronically, but care and attention to these guidelines are essential as importing graphics packages can often be problematic.

  • Figures must be saved individually and separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.
  • Avoid the use of colour and tints for purely aesthetic reasons.
  • Figures should be produced as near to the finished size as possible.
  • All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
  • Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
  • The filename for the graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.
  • Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).

Please note that it is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please do not hesitate to contact our Production Department if you have any queries.

Citations of other works should be limited to those strictly necessary for the argument. Any quotations should be brief, and accompanied by precise references.
Style. Please follow the style used in the current issue of the journal. The journal prefers '-ize' rather than '-ise' in words such as 'organize'. Quotations should be within single inverted commas; double within single.

References. Reference citation in the text should be as follows. The references should be given in shortened form in a footnote or endnote with a full version given in the list of references at the end of the article. Note reference numbers should appear as superior numerals following any punctuation marks (except the dash, which they should precede). The reference list should be given in alphabetical order following Chicago Humanities style:
