Instructions for Authors

ScholarOne Manuscripts
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

Nationalities Papers is the leading journal on nationalism, ethnicity, ethnic conflict and national identity in Central Europe, the Balkans, the former Soviet Union, the Caucasus, the Turkic world and Central Eurasia. Furthermore, the journal also publishes contributions on theories of nationalism, comparative studies of nationalism, and trans- and supranational aspects of interethnic relations and national identity. The journal publishes timely, high quality articles from a variety of disciplines, including history, political science, sociology, anthropology and literature.

Book Reviews and Review Essays

Nationalities Papers
publishes regular book reviews (800-1,000 words), longer review essays on particular themes or topics (2,000-6,000 words) and book symposiums with scholarly debates on important recent books.

Book Reviews:
If you are interested in writing book reviews for the journal, contact the Book Review Editor, Roland Spickermann, at spicker_r@utpb.edu to be included in the book reviewer database.

Review Essays: If you would like to propose a scholarly review essay to the journal, contact the Book Review Editor to discuss your ideas and request guidelines for submission.  Review essays engage the central theme of a set of significant books with the goal of providing our interdisciplinary and international readership an original argument about key questions and emerging trends in nationalism and ethnicity research.  Although we often commission review essays, we also invite unsolicited proposals.  Review essays between 2,000-3,000 words are accepted on the decision of two members of the Editorial Board.  Longer review essays, averaging about 6,000 words, go through a standard refereeing process.

Article Submissions

The journal welcomes submissions from multiple disciplines and different methodological approaches from scholars around the world. In addition to individual paper submissions, the journal also welcomes proposals for special symposia (3-5 articles) on specific regional or disciplinary themes. All symposia will undergo the same peer review process as other articles.

Enquiries: Direct all enquiries regarding articles and special symposia to the Editor: florian.bieber@uni-graz.at / Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, Universitätsstrasse 15/K3, 8010 Graz, Austria

Manuscripts:
Articles submitted to Nationalities Papers should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time. Articles should be between 8,000 and 10,000 words in length (including notes and bibliography). Authors should be prepared to submit an abstract of up to 200 words, which should describe the main arguments and conclusions of the article. Any acknowledgements should be included in the cover letter.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a means of making your article more visible to anyone who might be looking for it. Please consult our guidance here.
Authors should be mindful of the need to identify and reference quoted material – text , tables, and figures – clearly and consistently, and to secure written permission from the copyright holder as appropriate (Ethics of journal publishing).

Please note that a reference list should be supplied for all article submissions, and should contain all (and only) those references cited in the article. While endnotes can be used to cite multiple sources if a long parenthetical citation is likely to distract the reader, please note that sources in the endnotes should also be styled according to the reference guide, and that they too should be included in the reference list.

Electronic Submission: All submissions should be made online at the Nationalities Papers Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review”.

Table and captions to illustrations: Tables must be typed out on separate pages and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate page. Tables and Figures should be numbered consecutively by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to any symbols used.

Figures: We welcome figures sent electronically, but care and attention to these guidelines are essential as importing graphics packages can often be problematic.

  • Figures must be saved individually and separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.
  • Avoid the use of colour and tints for purely aesthetic reasons.
  • Figures should be produced as near to the finished size as possible.
  • All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
  • Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
  • The filename for the graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.
  • Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).

Please note that it is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please do not hesitate to contact our Production Department if you have any queries.

Citations of other works should be limited to those strictly necessary for the argument. Any quotations should be brief, and accompanied by precise references.
