Three complete copies of each manuscript should be submitted. They should be typed on one side of the paper, double spaced, with ample margins and bear the title of the contribution and name(s) of the author(s). The full postal address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included. All pages should be numbered. Contributions should not normally be more than 9000 words in length and should be written in the English language. They should also include an abstract of 100 words. Footnotes to the text should be avoided wherever this is reasonably possible.
The Journal also carries a Practice Notes section. Contributions to this section should not normally exceed 3000 words. Two complete copies should be sent to the Editor.
Manuscripts will not normally be returned unless a self-addressed envelope and international postal coupons have been sent.
Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate sheet. Tables and figures should be numbered by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to symbols.
Figures. Artwork must be submitted in suitable condition for publication. Any copyright permissions for use of figures should be cleared by the author when the manuscript is first submitted. The publishers are not responsible for obtaining copyright clearance.
References. These should be indicated in the typescript by giving the author's name and the year of publication, as follows: Parsons (1994) or (Parsons, 1994). If several papers by the same author and from the same year are cited, a, b, c, etc. should be put after the year of publication. The references should be listed in full at the end of the paper in the following standard form:
Clarence Stein's determination to reform housing and planning policy was rooted in his early education (Parsons, 1994)
Lang, J. (1994) Urban Design: The American Experience (New York, Van Nostrand Reinhold).
Parsons, K. C. (1994) Collaborative genius: the Regional Planning Association of America, Journal of the American Planning Association, 60 (4), pp. 462-482.

Titles of journals should not be abbreviated.
Proofs. These will be sent to authors if there is sufficient time to do so. They should be corrected and returned to the publishers within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.
