Instructions for Authors

All submissions should be made online at Gender & Education's Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, which should include a title page identifying the author/s, and should be named ''File not for Review'' while in the second all information identifying the author should be removed to allow for peer reviewing of anonymous manuscripts. Please name this ''Anonymous File for Review''.

If this instruction is not followed then the article will have to be unsubmitted from Manuscript Central and the author requested to resubmit.

If you are submitting a revised article in response to reviewer comments, please detail the changes you have made, and in response to which reviewer comments, in detail, in the field named ''Author's Response to Decision''. Please do not identify yourself / co-authors in this response, as it will be forwarded to reviewers. Please also paste these comments into a text file and upload them as a supplemental file when uploading your revised manuscript.

Manuscripts may fall into one of the following categories:

  • articles, ideally between 4000 and 8000 words
  • viewpoints, usually up to 5000 words, that are more polemical in tone and possibly based on the life experiences, ideas and views of the writer
  • comment and critique, usually up to 5000 words, about current events and policy
  • developments in education. Such comment and critique could relate to the international stage or to a particular country
Please state clearly in your cover letter and on the front page of your submission which type of contribution you intend to make (article, viewpoint, or comment and critique). All manuscripts submitted are subjected to independent refereeing.

The full name, postal address and email address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included.

Manuscripts should not presently be under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Submissions should be double spaced, with ample margins and bear the title of the contribution plus an abstract of 100-150 words and six keywords for online searching purposes. In order to protect anonymity, name(s) of the author(s) and institutional address, if any, should appear on a separate title page. The full postal address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included. All pages should be numbered. Footnotes to the text should be avoided wherever this is reasonably possible. The approximate total number of words should be specified on the title page.Style guidelines

Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables should be typed out on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate sheet. Tables and figures should be numbered with Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to symbols.

Figures. Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. If this is not possible, figures will be redrawn by the publishers.

Articles Accepted for Publication in Gender and Education.

Free article access. Corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through our website (www.informaworld.com) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Copyright: It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found at www.informaworld.com/authors_journals_copyright_position. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.

iFirst

iFirst is Taylor & Francis' proprietary system for publishing journal articles online almost immediately after author proofs have been corrected, so making New Knowledge available to the research community in the shortest possible time.

Articles appear exactly as they would in the journal's final online and print edition, with the single difference that ‘page spans' are not included – although we plan to introduce this in the near future!

All subscribers with electronic access to a journal can access iFirst articles.

iFirst reduces the time from article submission to publication – sometimes by several weeks.

iFirst also eliminates the problem of the backlog: accepted but unpublished papers. These papers can be published online through iFirst as soon as the production process is complete, ensuring submission-to-publication times are foreshortened, and assuaging author concerns about undue delay.
