Instructions for Authors

The Editors welcome contributions in the form of original articles, letters, or replies to articles. The Journal may in addition, at the discretion of the Editors, publish notices of courses, conferences and similar events.

Contributors should bear in mind that they are addressing an international audience, and papers are only accepted for review on the basis that they are not being submitted elsewhere for publication.

No payment is made for contributions, papers accepted become the copyright of the Journal.

Manuscripts
Articles should be of 6,000-8,000 words in length inclusive of references, though much shorter pieces are also welcome.

All submissions should be made online at Cambridge Journal of Education's Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as "File not for review".

Articles should be double spaced, with ample margins, and bear the title of the contribution, name(s) of the author(s) and the address where the work was carried out. Each article should be prefaced by an abstract of up to 150 words, and keywords. The full postal address and email address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints should also be included. All pages should be numbered.

Footnotes to the text should be avoided wherever this is reasonably possible.

Manuscript Processing

Figures.

We welcome figures sent electronically, but care and attention to these guidelines are essential as importing graphics packages can often be problematic.

  • Figures must be saved individually and separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the article file.
  • Avoid the use of colour and tints for purely aesthetic reasons.
  • Figures should be produced as near to the finished size as possible.
  • All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. Figure 1, Figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. Figure 1(a), Figure 1(b)).
  • Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the article, and numbered correspondingly.
  • The filename for the graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.
  • Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).

Please note that it is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please do not hesitate to contact our Production Department if you have any queries.

Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate pages and not be included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate page. Tables and figures should be numbered with Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to symbols.

Any consistent spelling style may be used. Please use single quotation marks with double within if needed.

Proofs will be sent to authors if there is sufficient time to do so. They should be corrected and returned to the Executive Editor within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.
