Instructions for Authors

Papers accepted become the copyright of the Publisher, unless otherwise specifically agreed. The material should not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere, even in translation.

Manuscripts that do not conform to the requirements listed below will not be considered for publication and will be returned to their author(s). Three complete copies of each manuscript are required. Papers should be between 4,000 and 8,000 words maximum (including a bibliography and footnotes). Papers should be typed on one side, double spaced, with ample margins and bear the title of the contribution.   Any information identifying the author should be removed from the manuscript to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. Please indicate clearly the final word count for the whole of your article. All pages should be numbered.

Two covering sheets should be included with the manuscript. The first sheet should have the title of the article, the name(s) of the author(s), the full postal and email address of the corresponding author who will check proofs and receive off-prints. The second sheet should include the title of the contribution, an abstract of 100 – 150 words maximum and up to six key words.

Manuscripts should be sent to Helen Oliver, British Journal of Sociology of Education. School of Education, University of Sheffield, 388 Glossop Road, Sheffield S110 2JA, UK.
For further advice on the submission procedure please email h.j.oliver@sheffield.ac.uk

Footnotes to the text should be avoided wherever this is reasonably possible.

Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate sheet. Tables and figures should be numbered by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to symbols.

Figures. Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. If this is not possible, figures can be redrawn by the publisher.

As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). For further information and FAQs, please see http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/permission.asp
