The International Journal of the History of Sport is widely regarded as the leading journal in the field of the historical study of sport in its political, cultural, social, educational, economic, spiritual and aesthetic dimensions. Published 16 times per year, the journal has no equal as a pioneer of Collections, Monographs, Regional Numbers and an Annual Historical Review, and it is the only journal of its kind that has appeared without a break for 26 years.

Many individuals have contributed to the advances that have occurred in the history of sport. However, it can be convincingly argued that no one has had a more influential role than J.A.Mangan. By the means of single-authored books..., the many enormously interesting collections that he has brought into being both as the founding editor of the series Sport in the Global Society now with some 110 volumes( and to which he has often contributed chapters), and his untiring work and vision as executive {founding} editor of the International Journal of the History of Sport( which now has grown to 14 issues a year and now includes articles from around the globe) his contribution has been unparalleled.
